I've been told recently that they are at max capacity for drivers so there are no plans for schools at the moment. Was the school in March the most recent?

It wouldn’t be the first time Nexus haven’t been entirely truthful when giving out reasons for disruption.
The eye seems to have been allowed to fall well off the ball in terms of keeping the current fleet going during the transition to the new trains.

Nothing new here. I don't expect to hear until early next year at the earliest tbh. I hold a faint hope for December time, to start some medicals for a March time course date.

I'm in the same boat mate. If there were to be a school in January I would think we would hear something soon but it feels like it depends on the success of the new trains whenever they are up and running.

Yeah I asked a pal who's been a driver on the Metro for a few years now, at the end of June if he'd been out in the new ones yet and he said they're not allowed to touch it until it had passed all its testing.
I'm not sure when or if the new one has passed the testing yet though, so can't imagine the current drivers have been on it much if at all still. Hopefully the conversion training is a fairly quick process but I wouldn't have a clue tbh.

Ah that's ****e mate. I had the phone call to book my medical early last October but I was going offshore and couldn't do it. When I got back to book it, they said they're not booking anymore as they now had the allocation for the January course. I was devastated as well!

As StuM knows I currently work for west midlands trains and we have had a new set of traction come into fleet. I can confirm that there is rigorous testing for new trains. I was seeing the new trains constantly out in the Birmingham area ( months in fact). Also I believe that maintenance also need to be fully trained on the trains. I'm unsure if the same practise is in place with nexus for current drivers and the new traction but down here current drivers just did a short course ( possibly a few days but I may be wrong) on the new traction as they had already passed out on other traction. Also they could get drivers in the simulator and then when the new trains come into service they could use coaches to train drivers whilst the train was in service. Hopefully we will hear something soon as I can't wait to get started.
Tyne and Wear Metro's new trains delayed again until 'early 2024'
The first of the new £362m fleet was due to enter the Metro timetable by the end of this year, but passengers will have to wait a little longer

Hi, I was on March course. Nearly everybody on my course passed out and out on our own now. I’ve heard no news of any potential courses starting I’m afraid. We were told that we would be last course to learn the current fleet however with the slight delay in the new train not sure if that still remains. Canteen talk is that there has never been more drivers employed.

Well done in passing out. Makes all the training and assessments worth it. Hopefully they will have another course starting in the new year. Do you think the number is drivers currently could change of local tocs advertise for drivers?

Thanks, training was intense at times but very enjoyable and a good laugh. There is a lot of helpful people around. You need to spend a lot of time revising but if you put the effort in then all will be fine. As has been mentioned previously the trainers are great and very helpful.
I’m unsure if drivers are looking to move on as much as they possibly once were with only being there a short time. A pay rise has just been accepted also. I haven’t seen any adverts for local TOCs other than LNER recently and obviously you would be starting from scratch as a trainee again leaving metro.
I’ve been on the new train and it looks like quite a bit of kit. Will obviously take as long as it takes to get it in service. We got a go little go of simulator for some fun during training also at shields. Like I mentioned earlier unfortunately I’ve heard nothing of any new courses. Obviously that being said doesn’t mean there isn’t any planned.

That sounds brilliant. Bet it was amazing having a go on the simulator for the new traction. Hopefully they get a new course started soon. I worked for wmt at the minute but at the latest will be moving to the north east next summer. Unless nexus want me before hand that is.

There's been a tweet today saying some services were canceled due to a lack of available drivers. Does anyone know what's going on if they have the most amount of drivers they have ever had? Not sure how common this is.
I heard this over the tannoy as I went to pick up my train. It’s rather annoying as it tends to push the blame onto drivers and you get all the tweets and Facebook comments saying it’s because we’ve all rang in sick to watch the match. (Terrific though it was). I’m not entirely sure what the issue was today as I’m sure there were spare drivers, but maybe their shifts didn’t quite match up with the drives that were needed or something. I don’t pretend to even vaguely understand how driver resourcing works.

Can someone contact them and ask for clarification? I would but I don't have an email address of an actual human. Just so we know as if they aren't going to take on for the foreseeable then there's no point waiting for them while other train companies are recruiting.
I wouldn't take any tocs word for it anyway. Just apply to any that are recruiting that you are interested in.
