Yes in terms of incode, however, in terms of output from the hardware, they are very very different. The one on 472 was poor enough that I mentioned to the conductor that there was a problem with the public address in my coach, as I could barely make out the words through the crackling and interference. He said with a wince that unfortunately they're all like this, and it's something that has already been fed back internally so there was nothing he could do. They also added that the digital train modifications have resulted in the public address handsets in the saloon being removed, so the original bombardier system was in fact better in every way really.
This promoted me to take a closer look at the screen in the unit. Unfortunately it's much more flickery and it's actually quite difficult to read compared to the Bombardier ones. I've attached a picture of the awful workmanship where the area previously under the screen casing hasn't even been cleaned before the new ones have been put in. Is that the finished product:

Then again, I know that the issue in these units where the charging sockets have been installed behind where the seat cushion goes has been raised multiple times internally and by customers over the last four years but that seems not to be something that is being fixed either:

Unfortunately despite a substantial amount of public money being spent on these units the customer experience they are offering has become worse rather than better. The units at ScotRail still do not have any of the above issues and work just fine. At least the ETCS cabinets aren't quite as intrusive as they are on the 150s, where several seats have been removed to accommodate them.
