Will you be the one to tell Pritti her constituents face some longer journey times? ;)

Believe it or not I have actually told her that. Long time ago.

Re my previous post - I was of course being provocative. However as the boys (and girl) in Colchester box will confirm, the liners do catch up the stopping passenger trains, and it is generally a good thing to keep the former moving. I do agree that it is, and will be, a rare event to see a passenger looped for a liner though.

You are not the only one either!

Yes one of the current down liner paths is a slow crawl behind the xx.02 Ipswich service, but I agree keep ‘em moving. I could though be equally provocative and ask what the rush is to export empty containers, or those full of scrap :)

They ruin our green and pleasant land sitting around on fields waiting to be removed, get rid of 'em. :E

Moved from other temporary thread:

The latest hurdle for the reopening of Beaulieu Park station has passed with detailed planning permission granted by Chelmsford council. Full additional details in story at

I note that the planned opening date is still 2026.

More details from Network Rail Grip Stage5 in the follow up story

Says platform 1 and 2 will be on an island platform accessed via the overbridge (with lifts) and platform 3 directly from the station building. Given the layout of the site, I assume that means the additional track to be built will become the Up Fast/Platform 1?

Planning permission has been given as of June 2022, with work expected to start from mid-2023.

Thread reopened for @fat_boy_pete to provide an update.
Construction contracts for the station have now been signed. Still scheduled for a 2026 opening. Local MP is quoted as work starting in early 2023. Regurgitated PR release summarised in link.

The new overbridge traversing the main line and the A12 slip road at Boreham Interchange is progressing. When complete, as well as a new eastern bypass for Chelmsford from the A12 to the A131, it will also provide the road access to the new station. Therefore I wonder if it will be promoted as a 'Park and ride'/Parkway station as easily accessible from the A12.

Work has commenced on construction of the station according to a BBC report

Interestingly, it's says completion is planned by the end of 2025. That may be the end of construction, but seriously doubt that it will open before May 2026, especially as the road works in the area are due to be finished by 2026.

Further update on Chelmsford City Council Website including aerial photos of site clearance for construction.

Again says construction completion due by end 2025. Presumably Timetable planning for actual service won't be until May 2026, or would there be allowance for stops in the WTT from December 2025 to allow for a possible earlier opening date?

Preparations have begun quite early. The Timetable Planning Rules for Dec 2023 have moved the engineering allowance to approaching Chelmsford to account for construction work. GEML rewrite on the cards again?

So December 23 to December 25, the timetable has allowance for speed restrictions through the site, then December 25 a new timetable, with dwell time allowance just for the chosen calling services?

The question then is, if there are still any Chelmsford peak starters, would they be scheduled from the new loop at the station before it was open. Any reason why not, if the track and signalling is finished by then? Or is it all too risky, and that change is delayed until May 26?

As there’s been plenty of useful updates on the progress of Cambridge South I thought I’d do something similar for Beaulieu Park. As you will hopefully see from the attached video link (sorry the file size was too big to link direct)
progress is well under way. The site is not especially assessable, not until the new relief road opens, so here is a video taken from a down train of the current state of works. The formation is being widened for the three track layout with the station building being on the down platform. The foundation works seen in the video i presume are for the island platform which serve the up line and the centre road. New foundation works for new OLE can also be seen.

Well done for capturing this. As you say, it's difficult to get a sense of the works, as access is difficult, but the video does show how wide the earthworks on site are.

From 1m57 to 2m11 is a series of L-shaped things - what are they, and why is the last one the wrong way around?

one thing I’ve wondered, what is the third platform for. Why was it not 4 with passing loops in both directions or 2 no passing loops. Is the 3rd platform bidirectional?

I don’t think there’s enough room for 4 tracks/platforms. The 3rd (centre) platform is for reversing trains; currently peak hour extra trains have to either start at Chelmsford using the down platform blocking its use whilst trains reverse. Or they run through to Witham where using the up loop conflicting with up trains with the approach points fairly low speed. A centre reversing platform reduces conflicts and will presumably have higher approach speeds. At other times the centre platform can be used for overtaking, though I’m not sure if it will be long enough for the longest freight trains (750m). Layout below taken from a screen shot from https://signalmaps.co.uk/#chelmsford:202

The proposed layout is similar (but not identical) to Laindon and Leigh-on-Sea stations on the London Tilbury & Southend line.

It was originally envisaged for 4 platforms, but I think they would have had to skew the tracks too far to the North, due to the adjacent road to the South - hence the final decision -

Preferred option:
The preferred option is a new 3-platform station at Beaulieu, with a turnback / central loop and car park, as detailed in Network Rail’s GRIP 2 report. As noted previously, various workshops were conducted with key stakeholders in order to reach a suitable solution for all parties.
Figure 3.1: GRIP 2 Preferred Operational Layout
Following the Value Management Workshop in 2016, stakeholders including Network Rail, Countryside Properties, Mayer Brown, AGA, ECC and CCC agreed that car parking should consist of 1,400 spaces, including 300 premium spaces and 1,100 in a multi-storey car park. The station should also have an adequate drop-off space, in addition to 2-4 bus stops within a reasonable distance of the main station building. Cycle parking should allow for up to 500 bikes.
This scheme helps support the ambition for growth in Chelmsford and Beaulieu, as it allows residents to easily to commute to jobs in other locations along the GEML. Furthermore, the creation of a new station offers an attractive sustainable travel option, as residents in Beaulieu would not have to rely on cars or buses in order to get to other stations if they desire to use the train. The inclusion of cycle parking and at least 2 high-quality bus stops also increases the attractiveness of sustainable travel options for residents, potentially helping to reduce the impacts of air pollution.
The station would also help maximise usage of the transport network through the usage of the turn back, which can be used to increase capacity on the line. This turn back will allow for services to terminate and return to London, potentially increasing the frequency of services from Chelmsford to London, also helping to both reduce overcrowding at Chelmsford station, and improve accessibility between North Chelmsford, Chelmsford City Centre, and London.
For the purposes of the business case, various timetable options have been analysed to understand the optimum performance in terms of new rail demand and impact on existing users. The business case presents sensitivity tests on the better performing options in Section 3.5, but for the purposes of a core preferred case the Medium B timetable option has been selected. This involves 5 trains per hour calling at Beaulieu in the peak period and 2 trains per hour in the off-peak period. This involves the move of existing Chelmsford starters to Beaulieu and additional station calls on existing services with consequent journey time impacts. Frequencies at all other stations remain as now.

Trains actually reverse in the Down Loop to the Country end of Chelmsford Station rather than reversing in Chelmsford Station itself. Thus allowing trains to pass. Additionally it means trains can load up on the Down Platform whilst trains pass through the Up Platform and then the Chelmsford starter is closer behind it.

Or they run through to Witham where using the up loop conflicting with up trains with the approach points fairly low speed. A centre reversing platform reduces conflicts and will presumably have higher approach speeds. At other times the centre platform can be used for overtaking,
Unfortunately it may actually add pressure at Chelmsford as the down platform won't be used and so therefore a train out of Beaulieu will be further from the train in front and closer to the train behind such that paths may not work.

though I’m not sure if it will be long enough for the longest freight trains (750m).
None of the routes will hold a 775m freight and frankly is an opportunity missed.

Not at all. Rather than freight being ‘in the way’, it’s much more often the case that Liners are held up by the stopping passenger trains. So the loop will be a perfect place to hold a passenger train out of the way for a passing freight.

Don’t start that again ;)

In a post Covid world with high capacity 720s the three platform option may have turned out to be the most cost effective solution for now, more by luck than judgement. The land-take for the operationally desirable long loops in both directions being too big apparently.

The other issue will be to see how many Braintree branch commuters drive here for a more frequent service than they currently get from Braintree.

This is a valid observation with the current timetable. It is a bigger re-write than just simply having Chelmsford starters coming from Beaulieu Park.

Noted when travelling past yesterday progress with a number piles for OLE on the down side with about 6 new masts installed at the north end of the formation.
