Hey, I was wondering if I could use my FIP card or Leisure travel card to book a sleeper train from London to Scotland…

Thanks :)

You certainly can, you can either do this by ringing Caldedonian Sleeper customer services (usually very helpful) or your local booking office can book a berth. Note you can't book any seats just berths.

Yes. I'm presuming you work for one of the British TOCs, so your FIP card won't be valid - but you can use your Rail Staff Leisure Card ("Priv") to get a discount.

One option is to buy a discounted all-inclusive berth fare - bookable through the RSTL website if you have access to this, or otherwise through Caledonian Sleeper's customer services or (if they know how to do it) any booking office. If you have standard class facilities you can book a Classic (standard class, non-ensuite) room; if you have first class facilities you can book either a Classic or Club (first class, ensuite, with lounge access) room. You can't get any discount on a Caledonian Double room.

The other option is to buy a Priv-discounted walk-up ticket (Super Off-Peak/Off-Peak - there are no time restrictions when using the Sleeper). If you want to travel in the seats then all you need is a free seat reservation; if you want to travel in a berth then you can pay the normal public berth supplement. Either the reservation or the supplement can be obtained through Caledonian Sleeper's website by specifying that you already have a valid ticket.

The only thing you can't get a discount on is the dedicated, train-specific Caledonian Sleeper ticket for the seats.

Staff travel facilities are not valid for the seats on the Caledonian Sleepers, though I believe they are accepted on the GWR Night Riviera.

I just had a quick look and couldn't see a way to book through RSTL - perhaps I'm doing something wrong? I searched for Euston to Fort William for journeys after 2000hrs.

(The attached screenshot says: "Please note that for travel on Sleeper services, reservations are compulsory for both berth and seated accommodation. If you wish to purchase a ticket for travel on this service, please visit the Caledonian Sleeper web-site."

The CS website doesn't sell Priv or FIP discounted tickets - it used to, but simply used an easy-to-guess discount code which was (rather predictably) abused. But the RSTL ticket selling site, which most domestic Priv holders will have been given login details for, is able to sell them. Otherwise Priv/FIP holders need to speak to CS customer services.

Sorry, to make myself clearer, I go to the RSTL website and log in

Then I looked for a random date

And get results

So it gives a couple of options for seated travel, but specifically tells me I can't book Priv sleeper tickets.

It could be I am doing something wrong, or do you think that RSTL do not allow Priv holders to book CS tickets anymore?

In any case, it's infinitely easier to book at a large mainline station - I've had good success at King's Cross, but not everyone can get to a large station.

(sorry it's all on mobile)
