Yesterday at Nottingham a Northern class 156 (i think) came in, I noticed that one of the cables between the two carriages was sheared off and hanging freely, I pointed it out to the guard who looked at it with the driver and phoned someone, but it obviously wasn't important as the train still left on time, with the cable still hanging...

I was wondering what the purpose of that cable is, if the train can operate freely without it? It looked like some kind of multi-core electrical cable. Any ideas?

Pretty sure I've seen it as a 156 before.

I've also seen 3-car 158s, 158+153, 155, 150...

EDIT: The more I think about it the more I doubt I have.

Most DMUs will have 3 cables or pairs of cables between coaches. Multiple control, high voltage (usually 415v) and low voltage (24v). The only one that is essential under all circumstanes is multiple control, as without that the brakes wouldn't release. As long as both engines are running, the power cables don't really do anything. Still wouldn't want them dangling though, especially if likely to short out to anything (high voltage shorting out is not at all good, low voltage shorting to the running rails could false feed a track circuit causing a wrong side failure).

Second generation DMUs in the Northern fleet don't use a 415v supply. Between the vehicles there is a main air pipe and the 24v multiple control jumper, the individual vehicles supply their own heat and light supply. Some types (such as 150/2 and 158) have 2 jumper cables. Modern units running 3 phase will have extra jumpers.

There is usually a 156 on the lincol Sheffield route. Or if it's not usually on. Then it's not uncommon to be on

Northern 156s never work any diagrams in South Yorkshire (with the exception of the Hope Valley stoppers), and rarely make appearances elsewhere in Yorkshire. They operate solely over the other side of the Pennines now. Last time I had a 156 in the region was Summer 2009.

When did Newcastle/Middlesbrough/Whitby end up on the other side of the Pennines to Yorkshire? :|;)
You get the idea, I was mainly thinking about Yorkshire! Some of the 156s go from Newcastle to Carlisle so I'm still partly right about them being in the west even if I did forget!

@Yew, it was probably a 150 or a 153 you saw, they're all Sprinters so you'd be forgiven for making that mistake.
