KendalKing, quite correct, the 555s were routed via Bowness & Crook. I travelled on the already delayed 15:15 departure from Windermere towards Kendal & Lancaster. After Bowness, we took the Newby Bridge, then turning left, up one hill, signposted Kendal & Lancaster, one hill was nearly enough for the Bus, boy did it struggle, then turned left & immediately turned right onto the Crook road, this hill nearly took its toll on the bus & we were at crawling pace, really not suited to Double Deckers, especially the many bends & attempting to make up time was absolutely impossible. Driver must have had enough!
Nearly had a problem @ Kendal though. Due to the delays, Stagecoach provided another bus to run right time in our timings to Lancaster, with our forwarding Driver, therefore we could have been stranded for an hour, fortunately, a Driver must have been called in from Home, as he didn't have any time schedule or the thing they put in the ticket machine, so couldn't take any fares, therefore we were set-down only to Lancaster & bypassed Heversham. It arrived in Lancaster @ 17:40 instead of 17:25.

Driver will have been the spare pulled in at short notice, not had time to get to the depot to pick up timings/module.

Not that they're needed when the service has been duped and people are only being dropped off.

Exactly.

It must have been a very frustrating afternoon for Stagecoach & it's Drivers.

It doesn't help that buses don't have Radio communication, so unless the Driver has a mobile phone, one is in a right mess!

Loads of kids for Staveley were dumped @ Windermere & told "Sorry, you'll have get the train Home"!

AFAIK all Kendal's drivers have a company mobile.

May sound harsh, but I'm glad the Stavely kids got booted off; they're worse than Dalam for graffitting/vandalising vehicles! (Though last tiem I was on there were a few lookers!!)

CHANGES GO-AHEAD TO EARLY FREE BUS TRAVEL IN CUMBRIA
By Julian Whittle
Last updated at 13:10, Thursday, 31 March 2011

Changes to concessionary bus fares in Cumbria tomorrow will end free travel before 9.30am on weekdays.

A uniform concessionary fares scheme will apply across the county allowing free travel between 9.30am and 11pm on Mondays to Fridays and all day at weekends.

These restrictions apply already in Allerdale and Copeland.

But in Carlisle and Eden pensioners and other concessions have been able to use their NoWcards at any time.

The change will hit pass holders who work or volunteer and use early morning buses to commute.

It will also hit rural areas where the only bus to Carlisle or Penrith leaves before 9.30am.

This is the case in Castle Carrock, Talkin, Walton, Laversdale, Hethersgill and Irthington, and many villages in the Eden Valley served by Fellrunner volunteer minibuses.

Phyllis Francis, 67, of Castle Carrock, has called for her twice-a-week bus to run later so she can travel free.

She said: “We will find ourselves in a situation where some people on the bus have paid and others have not. It is ridiculous. We shouldn’t have to pay when others haven’t.”

Cumbria County Council has taken over responsibility for concessionary fares from the district councils.

It says that a £1.2m cut in government funding has forced it to end free travel before 9.30am.

But the council has ruled out changing the times of its subsidised rural buses as Mrs Francis suggested.

A spokesman said: “If we did start altering timetables to bring the times of certain services forward, we’d be in a position where we were paying extra money when we are required to make savings.”

The Fellrunner has also ruled out changes to times.

Instead, it will charge a flat fare of £1.50 to concessions who travel before 9.30am.

Stagecoach, however, is altering the 9am Carlisle-Keswick departure on service 554, which is popular for day trips to the Lake District. It will leave after 9.30am from April 11.

The company can do this because the 554 is run without a subsidy.

Other routes affected, such as the 97 from Castle Carrock, are under contract to the county council.

Stagecoach cannot alter times unless the council asks it to. In future, applications for NoW cards and renewals will be handled by libraries in Carlisle, Penrith, Workington, Whitehaven, Kendal and Barrow, instead of council offices.

There are 94,000 NoW card holders in Cumbria.

The council is also raising fares on subsidised routes by 10 per cent from tomorrow.

Non-subsidised services run by Stagecoach and Reays’ City Hopper in Carlisle are not affected.

20994 on 300.
16441, 20962, 35248 and 35249 on 30/31.
20473 on 51.
4 Solo's on the other town services (47005, 47007 sounding rather overly knackered, 47023 and 47059).
20923 squealing on short 300.
16733 was on annexe, refused to select a gear.
16447 was flying around, didn't want to come out of 1st again.
16649 around too, making some whiney noises. Still picks up speed better than 16651/2/3/4 did though.

Just a shame the powered wheelchair ramp wasn't moved to the front door from the centre. Makes it kinda useless for meeting the DDA regulations.

Looks brilliant.

If SC are indeed not bothering with moving the ramp to the front door (I not convinced they wont) or even providing it with a separate ramp like we have on our MANs I think that's very odd. Spending all this money and they aren't even going to be DDA compliant?

Does anyone know where the accidents happened between Windermere & Kendal?

Also, with the rather slow Bowness-Kendal via Crook Road, would it not save time to route 555s via Newby Bridge on future occasions?

It'll probably have been at the summit about 1.5miles after the roundabout at the top of Kendal, where the dual carriageway goes to single/crawler in the opposite direction.

That short stretch has claimed something like 350 lives in 5 years....(mostly bikers)

Personally, I don't like going along the Windermere-Newby Bridge road in a car, let alone a bus! Plus it's a long way round....

Must be a shortage of drivers:idea:

It happen at Plantation Bridge, thats the turning for Cowan Head & Bowston off the A591

I could not agree more with MBonwick.

Having had driven along both roads with Buses & Coaches, I prefer the Crook Road

As usual, Gez explains all!
I thought he seemed a little unfamiliar with the roue (or was just cautious).

One of Travellers solos had a broken LED today back and front. No window boards.

22804/13 made it out onto the 42 today with an Oly. 18362 was out on the 40m and spotted 15681 heading dead out of Galgate toward the motorway.

CHANGES TO SERVICES 109, 125/126 AND X61

TIMETABLE CHANGES
We are making a number of changes to services 109, 125/126 and X61 from 24th April 2011, with the main aim of improving the reliability of the timetables.

109 Preston - Leyland - Buckshaw Village - Chorley
We are making changes to the Monday to Friday morning timetable in order to improve reliability. We are aware that some journeys currently run late as a knock-on effect from traffic congestion on school days and the new timetable seeks to address this.

125/126 Preston - Chorley - Bolton
We are revising the Monday to Friday timetable. The key change to note will be that all 126 journeys will be removed from operating into Chorley Hospital grounds. The time freed up by this will assist with operating via Walton Summit. The 125 will continue to operate via the grounds. There will be other minor timetable changes as well.

X61 Blackpool - Preston - Chorley - Manchester
In order for us to operate this service more efficiently, the section of route between Manchester and Chorley will operate as service X60. Buses will still operate through as normal and the timetable will be almost completely unchanged. We are taking the opportunity to operate an extra Saturday morning journey through to Blackpool.
