Scotrail 2Z26 Shotts - Troon service

Can anyone tell me the purpose of this Scotrail service today, running as 2Z26? Apart from reversing at Glasgow Central it doesn't seem to be stopping anywhere.

I believe it could be a religious groups annual trip from the area. In past years I recall a it leaving from Shotts and going to Burntisland using 2 class 156s coupled. This was before the line was electrified.

It’s the St Patrick’s Picnic Group’s annual summer outing. They are a Catholic social club who have been organising trips to the seaside by chartered train for years, they have also been to Ayr and Burntisland in the past as well as Troon.

MASSIVE THANKS AND GRATITUDE TO SCOTRAIL

We wouldn’t be able to carry on with such a magnificent event if it wasn’t for our friends at ScotRail, they have went above & beyond on many occasions to accommodate us for many year! #97 was no different!

They definitely kept us on the right TRACK..️ on more ways than one with this years return to Troon.

I just wanted to make a special mention to two special employees who have been a pleasure to deal with.. <snip name> & <snip name> thank you for the help & guidance over the last 12 months.

As can be seen, this summer excursion has run for many years!

IIRC in the past (diesel days), two trains ran, one for the children and one for most of the adults. The childrens' train departed first and was looped en route so that the adults' train terminated first, for safe boarding and alighting of the children. I'm sure however that on one occasion (at least) the looping on the return was forgotten and the horde of children descended upon Shotts station first.....

Surprised to see a train charter. Is the only time this happens with Scotrail?
