On TripAdvisor - or any other review site - you generally have patterns that look like this:

For a "good" place

1687041254163.png

For a "bad" place

(I won't give sources for either of the above as I just clicked around London for a couple of minutes to find ones that illustrated my point but search term for the first was "Indian" and for the second was "KFC" ;))

Every so often though you get a very interesting curve like this:

or

1687041448962.png

(I'm not really sure why they are formatted differently as I got them both off TripAdvisor for this but maybe restaurants are treated differently. The first is from Littledean Jail - somewhere I massively recommend but only if you can handle eccentricity and know what you're getting into - basically it's a lunatic's collection of "bad things" - while the second is from Nusr Et, somewhere I know enough about to not have been to)

I call this a concave review curve. Like you would sterotypically get for Marmite. It's quite rare - it's for something you either love or hate.

I bring this up because there's a long running thread in the Underground section about Worst Tube Line and it seems to me that the Bakerloo would get reviews like this. Loads of five star reviews from enthusiasts and nerds like me who love the vintageness of it... and loads of one star reviews from people who hate the old fashioned decaying stock. There doesn't seem to be much room in between.

Similar parts of the railway these days that might get reviews like that would be e.g. Scotrail's HSTs perhaps, or or a couple of years ago Class 37s on the Cumbrian Coast, or venturing outside of stock/lines - how about the current LNER abolishment of returns.

What else on the modern railway do you think has a marmite/concave review curve?

In non-railway terms, I would suspect a product with a review curve like that (unless it's understandably a "Marmite" product, like , err, Marmite) had been offering "incentives" to give 5 star reviews and would tend to assume that the 1 star ones (why can't you give 0 stars?) to be the more genuine!
I have myself recently left a 1 star review for a company where I've had my fingers burnt, and when doing so noticed that, whereas a lot of the bad reviews were telling very similar stories in different (genuine-sounding) words, a large proportion of the good ones looked like "cut and paste" jobs where the sentences didn't always fit together and were very generic.

Beat me to it, treat 5 star reviews as genuine only if spread over time. Bogus reviews are often posted all on the same day, which give the 'Marmite' curve to places with predominantly bad reviews but with the addition of bogus ones.

As a keen collector of management wibble I do like this. I hope that the manufacturers of Marmite have got some management consultants in to investigate their concave review curve.

I seem to have found a new calling. My mate's rates are £5k / day, but I will investigate some people's curves for free.

Gonna throw this thread on a bit of a tangent, but what about reviews with convex curves? Basically those where “average” gets the most reviews while “excellent” and “terrible” get the least.

Theoretically everything should get that. However, people with extreme views (justified or not) are more likely to leave reviews.
