Good grief.hock: Names are making a comeback on East Coast, and on proper nameplates too! I hope this is the first trickle of a steady stream of naming, I miss all the East Coast 91s and 43s having names.

Agreed, why did National Express feel the need to dename the 91s and 43s in the first place?

After all, there's a few 90s running around on the Great Eastern which are named....

I came up with a list of names I'd like to see on the 91 fleet a while back (some are not chosen by me but are just the original names):

• 91101 - 'Swallow'
• 91102 - 'Swift'
• 91103 - 'Merlin'
• 91104 - 'Intercity'
• 91105 - 'British Rail Engineering Limited'
• 91106 - 'Electra'
• 91107 - 'Ian Allen'
• 91108 - 'Sir David Attenborough'
• 91109 - 'The Samaritans'
• 91110 - 'Cancer Research UK'
• 91111 - 'Guide Dogs For The Blind'
• 91113 - 'Michael Faraday'

Weren't they GNER names (stickers) by that point? not much extra weight (compared to the NXEC white stripe) and no drag at all.

And it was "Saint Nicholas" before that in Intercity days as 91009 There's only a couple of the old Intercity names that still stand out to me; "Swallow" and "Sir Henry Royce" are the others: Probably because of the Hornby models of these locos at the time.

But it’s definitely the GNER names that have stuck with me: I just had a go at scribbling them all down (and the loco they belonged to), and there’s only four that I’d forgotten. I’d like to see GNERs’ location based naming scheme returned, there was a romance to those names.

As far as i am aware ( having travelled on most of them!) none of the EC fleet except 43300 (and perhaps still 43367 & 43290) carry names

I personally find GNER's location based names less interesting, and seeing as I want to see the 225s moved to GWML to save the Pembroke Dock service (and because ERTMS is going there first, which gives the 225s a chance to get to 140mph) they would be inappropriate.

91109 was "Saint Nicholas" from '93 up until the nameplates were removed at the start of privatisation. IIRC it was one of the first 91s to be named by GNER when it was christened "The Samaritans".

It’ll be a good while until the 91+mark 4s are off the East Coast, and surely names like “Duke of Edinburgh” and “Royal Armouries” would be unsuitable for the GWML as well? Ah well, each to their own, I’ve always been keen on location based names, that as well as those based on mythology and legend.

This traditional East Coast naming policy extends further. When I thought that NXEC were going to get some 90s, I began to plan a letter suggesting that 90016 should be Red Rum, followed by Shergar, Desert Orchid and so on.

I'm not sure how much drag you can get off a nameplate but I doubt it's going to be enough to cause any significant effect.

GNER/NXEC never had proper nameplates other than 1 or 2 sets, all of the names were vinyl's. Excluding the GNER crest which was cast iron on the MK3's. Having them on the MK4's seems to present problems although I do believe a few did have them.

Back on topic, East Coast are planning on naming more of the fleet, and this is just the first of many.

As for repainting Grey, probably not. They were getting the silver paint jobs so I'd see no reason why this would change.

91's with western names? Wrong. Just wrong. They always have been associated with the great northern and LNER routes. "Route of the flying scotsman" you might say! Yeah I know its a "what if" scenario but it just feels wrong. As for nameplates adding weight and drag... Oh please.

It was D1018 named "Western Buccaneer".

If East Coast are resurrecting a naming policy, then that's good news! I'd admittedly forgotten about the three EC power cars that had 'plates.

91111 - 91120 Names of Railway Related People that has history on the ECML, George Stephenson, Robert Louis Stephenson, Sir Nigel Gresley (I know, I know) etc &
91121 - 91131 - Charity names such as Sir Bobby Robson, Marie Curie, Guide Dogs etc

I Think these would be good names for the Class 91 fleet in East Coast...
(91109 and 91101 would obviously keep their current names (Sir Bobby Robson & Flying Scotsman), so I have kept those in place.
I have also kept some of the 91s with their previous GNER names as I thought they would be good names to stay with the loco.
