I wonder if there is one named after James Watt. He invented machines that could push and pull all night long without slacking off

They're inanimate objects, they have no gender (Unless you're French).
To refer to a locomotive which has been named after a man as "she" just sounds stupid.

It has happened for donkeys years now, longer than we have been around. All items of transport are refered to in the female sense.
OK, so some may refer to them as 'it', although this itself isnt correct, but to come out and say 'its wrong, and it doesnt sound right' and then refusing to accept it when someone tells you differently, is showing a lack of willingness to learn or accept the way things have happened for years.
Whether it be ships, trains, planes, or cars, they are refered to as the fairer sex, and that is a female.

How can you be so sure they are female??

Dont tempt me to answer that one!!!

In all seriousness though, its happened for years. Just like a ships so called 'horn' isnt actually a horn. Its still called a whistle.
We have kept with tradition and we treat these fine machines with respect. No 'it', and definitely no 'he'. That doesnt sound right.

Steam locos are definitly female, afterall it takes a long time to get her all hot and steamy and ready for action! Oh and you've got to make sure she's well lubricated if you want the parts to move around smoothly!

Diesels on the other hand are more manly, you just push one button and they turn on straight away, they are always ready for action, and they can do the job and be finished whilst the steam loco is still warming up!

That is a somewhat hypocritical post to make.

First you say that not referring to them as 'she' is incorrect, but then comment about showing a lack of willingness to accept the different views?

I have not attempted to change your opinion, so please, don't try and change mine.
(I realise the EFT post should have had a smilie - though I assumed the French comment would show that it wasn't entirely serious).

By some - not all.

Anyway, I'm not feeling in the mood for an argument tonight, we're not going to change each other's point of view so just leave it here, alright?

Diesels are also normally very mucky, clag a lot and make far too much noise. Cost too much to fill up and can be very unreliable......yep deffo male :)

The French have three genders; Men, Women and Ships, if Al Murray is to be taken seriously :)

I can leave it here, yes. Except, i never said anything about 'not accepting different views'. I said 'not accepting it when someone tells you differently'. Wasnt on about views, was on about facts. So, not actually hypocritical!!

Steam engines only perform well when given the most expensive coal available, are repeatedly sent away for repairs to keep them functioning properly and looking presentable. Complex, difficult to understand for the unfamiliar, bloody expensive to feed and keep in spare parts, loud as someone mentioned already.

Yes, steam locomotives are definitely female <D

Steam locos are beautiful, timeless, have a great place in history and are admired by many. I agree....female! ;);)

Was trying to cut it down a bit to avoid a long post, so didn't use quite the right word.

Anyway, where's Ivo got to? I wonder if he's gone to propose? :lol:

To keep with the original spirit of the thread, driving a diesel is just about moving a handle backwards and forwards, wheras a steam loco requires a much more delicate and gentle touch to get her really going!!

If we get into this famous argument. In Russia, ships (and presumably locos) are "he" by tradition, while they are "she" in the west. Wrecks and ships held in contempt are "it", and to call a ship "it" is an insult to the crew. "She" is a token of respect, because ships and locos (like women :?: :) ) have to be treated well and looked after if they are to do their very best for you when you need them to. What does that say about us as men? :?

In the cab with the paper
A more experienced suitor? As in some sort of sugar daddy?? :)

Not a sugar daddy necessarily, no.

Maybe someone of the elder generation may be able to afford a ticket on the cally.....hmmmmm, you may have something there OL.

Hmm. Not sure I like the inference that I might be in the "elder generation". At what age does someone become part of the elder generation?

But why bother with the expense of the Cally...? There's heaps of room to lie down in the cab of a Cl315 or, if you're feeling particularly daring or fancy the variety, a couple of seats or the secondman's desk.

Trying to muscle in on Ivos patch, eh OL? ;)

Is it Ivo's patch...?

But to answer the question directly, no I'm not. I'm just challenging an assumption.

Oh thats nothing new. He was at it last night. As soon as he thinks Ivo isnt looking, he starts flirting like a trooper!!

I think you must be getting me mixed up with someone else.

Ivo's going to have a lot to read after his birthday party!

Pant... Pant... Done! :D

Are you guys still at it?!

Obviously.

People older than Kernowfem??.....sheesh you know how to flatter....:lol::oops:

Sorry honey :( I'm not used to this game. I'm still short of even amateur status. Even becoming Two little Ducks [22] isn't going to help that. My point was that, based on my having accidentally discovered your age, I can say for certain that the age difference between us isn't all that much...

Why is it on this lovely forum ive had such nice compliments and an offer of marriage, and yet when i find myself on a platform, at a steam gala or anywhere near a track i get looked at like im some sort of nugget??? :shock::?:-D

You are all such gentlemen :D:D

You never know; we might meet on a platform one day! :p You have all these compliments because I/we feel you that deserve them! P.S.: Did you like the honeymoon and wedding ideas? I thought people forum-wide might like the enjoy of throwing in some traditional British unit at the end of it all (i.e. the Pacer). Imagine going on a Pacer in a bridal dress...

Trying to muscle in on Ivos patch, eh OL? ;)

Take the hint everyone (not just OL); this is my patch! All of you, support me or sod off! Except of course for the fair lady; you have to support me in a different fashion (and I, you, in the same way?)...

Firstly..the Scotsman is a HE not a SHE, only a man could be that tempremental and such hard work ;)

Everybody knows all locos are 'shes'!

Everybody knows all locos are "its"!

Can we cut the sexism please? I don't want to ruin my chances here, as though being away for most of yesterday, most of today and most/all of tomorrow won't hurt them enough...!

Anyway, where's Ivo got to? I wonder if he's gone to propose? :lol:

Pictionary/Charades Night actually (for my birthday); I would have invited my apparent wife-to-be if it had been viable ;)

Don't worry we'll keep it up, errm, going. :oops:

You'd better...!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This year was the very first time I was asked to make a wish upon blowing out the candles (or, in this case, lighter :roll:) after the "Happy Birthday" song. I went with the first one I thought of... whoops. It involved a certain lady! :oops::shock::oops::p:oops::shock::oops:
I think you may have misunderstood. I meant you may have something there, as in an idea! :) i wasn't implying you were "old" :)
