Hello - does any forum reader know more on B1 61306 "Mayflower" trip down to Portsmouth on 31st May?

Realtime showed it aa Shoeburyness to Portsmouth, arriving Pompey just before noon; returning that eve.

Here's it passing Havant on its return eastwards.

I looked on Steam Dreams site but I only saw 10th June's trip listed

I've changed this thread name, to reflect Mayflower's 31st May and 10th June stints to Pompey, plus Flying Scotsman's 17th June trip.

Two photos of 10th June's run, local locations. I also caught it at Buriton as it climbed the South Downs - no photo, but what a fantastic sound!

I'd love to see photos from members of this forum. Go on, share the love!

From Horsley today, working hard up the bank from Effingham Junction. A large crowd turned out thanks to a local on-line posting about the trip. Video to follow. It was far too warm for any visible exhaust (apart from a little smoke). BTW, "clearance testing' is not done using passenger workings such as ran on 31 May!

Although I'm aware there are no turntables at the Portsmouth end, one thing struck me was the amount of ECS running in order to turn 61306 round so it faced correctly on its return trip from Portsmouth

Before I checked Realtime today, I thought the train would have reversed at Havant, then travel to Fareham via the north side of Farlington junctions.
Once arrived at Fareham, it would then reverse to reach Portsmouth & Southsea.
I fully understand why the formation recessed at Fratton sidings to clear the platform at Portsmouth & Southsea.

Portsmouth-Littlehampton-Eastleigh-Portsmouth are running as 1Zxx headcodes, i.e. in Passenger Service. Steam dreams have a habit of filling the down time in between the legs of a tour with a little lunchtime extra option.

Didn't know that, I'm trying to get to grips with Realtime so I can inform my FB friends/former schoolmates living in Portsmouth area about next Saturday's Flying Scotsman visit to the city

Flying Scotsman's times will only be uploaded quite close to the date to deter trespass.

The Railway Touring Company's site has a summary of the outward route (albeit without timings).
Odd route description there - at Farlington Junction I’d have thought the ‘main line’ goes to Portsmouth, it’s the Fareham direction that is the branch.

Reminds me how LSWR's now-closed route to Fareham via Alton (the Meon Valley railway) was conceived as an additional "main line to Fareham" .

So perhaps a route toward Fareham was the "main"?
A speculative thought, no more

The main is towards Portsmouth, Fareham is the branch as shown on signal HT37 with feathers to top right.

Cheers, Neil

Either on the normal bulk upload overnight Friday/Saturday. If there are serious concerns over trespass, the schedules will only be loaded a couple of hours in advance of operations.
Once or twice they have been loaded by NR control as VSTP timings shortly before departure.

As a public news item it shows how seriously the Southern routes of NR are taking the trespass problem. Hopefully the local news coverage will be responsible and repeat the message from NR, but somehow I doubt it.

Cheers, Neil

Yep, times when I did it were published from TPS the afternoon before the date of departure (including positioning/empty moves etc), or Friday afternoon if train departing Sunday, to upload overnight after the publication run. Every now and again Class 1 schedules withheld for the manager or control to upload at short notice (but notices sent out to ops staff ahead of publication).

Yes, very seriously. Trespass teams used to ring up if they spotted a steam train notice fearing it was Scotsman, and were quite relieved if it was just a Black 5 or the B1 rostered to haul it.

I do like the note to editors clarifying that 60103 never worked the Southern in normal service though. Of all the things to clarify!

Expected to be very busy, multiple agencies are involved with crowd control along the route. Wouldn't have minded what is essentially paid trainspotting if I wasn't already working elsewhere

I've done theatre stewarding in my time, the rule is that you're there to watch the crowd, not the show!

Nothing wrong with doing a bit of both ;) (Obviously when I do crowd control, safety of the crowd takes priority, but it does mean that you can sometimes watch some interesting services when it's less busy)

Oh for sure, we were very happy if somebody didn't make it and we could get a proper audience seat to glimpse the show ;)

Have managed to find time on realtimes for Flying Scotsman visit however the outward journey shows it going down the Bournemouth main rather than the Portsmouth main!
This may change within 24 hours though

And its 1Z73 return journey, incidentally it reverses at Havant https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:U53104/2023-06-17/detailed
It stables in Fratton EMU sidings 5Z72 https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:U53102/2023-06-17/detailed

They're obviously going for stretching out the journey a bit. The return even goes via the Salisbury avoiding curve. The reversal at Havant is needed to turn the train, as it goes directly into Portsmouth on arrival (having the loco on the blocks gives some nice photos and also having it country end makes it easier to get a bowser to it in the sidings.

Thanks for that, too.

Does any of you know which end of Havant station for reversals? I don't know of a crossover at Warblington end, so I presume ithe crossover is Bedhampton end? I'm mooting my photo location and the sun's position

Facing and trailing crossovers at both ends, the Steam will be on the Portsmouth end. It will be diesel hauled into Havant, then Scotsman leading the departure towards Fareham.

It’s scheduled to arrive in Platform 1 at Havant. The layout at Havant means the track is bi-directional with cross overs either end of the station.

The cross over on the west is just before the road bridge on Park Road North - main road and don’t even think about trying to dash across the road quickly.

There is a footbridge at Bedhampton Station and also at Stockheath, both of which are likely to be busy.

The Sunny South Coast's rain cloud welcomed Flying Scotsman's arrival, here between Cosham Junction & Portcreek Junction

....And the return leg's Havant reversal, here passing Bedhampton

Saw her at Woking, Portsmouth Harbour, Fratton and Havant.
Lovely day watching her, but South Western Railway staff were complete a***holes at Portsmouth Harbour Station telling people they couldn't take pictures at the end of the platform as she came in! As I left the station the announcer on the PA was really getting shirty with people!! Ha!!!

But other than that a really nice day
