Facemasks in Italy?

Just seeking advice. I was just watching a video on youtube of a couple travelling from Sicily to Rome on an Italian sleeper, and they were wearing masks to board the train. The caption stated that the video was filmed last year. I thought that the wearing of face masks was not compulsory anywhere in Europe. Could someone please enlighten me, as I'm travelling out there on 21st July, and the wearing of face masks would be an issue for me.

I went to Italy in November including Naples to Siracusa on the train and barely anyone wore masks and it was no longer a rule.
