I’ve asked this and people only seem to want to refer to the Desiros / there is also a far more comprehensive refurbishment for the 458s as you will know, so they have their own thread. Perhaps a mod can rename the thread to “SWR Desiro repaints”?

Yes and thought of this and totay agree with you that it should either be renamed or include the class 458/158/159 stock

But why, when no 158/159s have since been repainted or refurbished? And the 458s, as it stands, remain on a knife edge with only a handful of units being repainted / refurbished before testing. Until a decision is made in earnest on those, I think it’s right that they stay in their own dedicated thread.

I agree that the 458s should stay in their own thread, but all the while this is treated as a 444/450 thread only - or indeed a thread that doesn't cover the whole fleet - the current title is misleading.

No 158s/159s are to be refurbished now. Not sure about the liveries.

I'm no electrician but the current-load - from multiple concurrent plugged-in devices - is possibly higher than a 159's rated max safe load for its wiring?

If not plugs USB sockets, GWR have fitted USBs to 158s so it should be possible on 159s

All 158 fleets now have plug sockets or USB sockets with the exception of SWR’s Sprinter fleet. It is do-able, but it costs money. And that’s the crux.

It was still in the franchise agreement in 2019 to fit 240V or USB sockets in the SWR 158/159 fleet.

AFAICT it’s been cancelled since, that’s the same as every other bit of planned interior work on the 158/159 fleet.

I get that following Drummond’s death that no new recordings are possible so change is inevitable but after all this time, why is this change suddenly happening now?

It’s a shame we’ve lost Phil and Celia to be honest. I always used to like the Up / Down arrangement they had at South West Trains stations, sadly now replaced with ATOS Annie.

Of course there were a weird few that had only one or the other, on all platforms. Aldershot, for example, had Celia on all three until about 2015, then Phil on all three until 2017, then new Celia on all three until the ATOS installation. Similar to how Bath Spa has just Rodger and no Anne, curiously.

Although the current SWR livery looks very smart, for me there's definitely some nostalgia for the bright colours of SWT - it always felt reassuringly like an evolution of Network SouthEast. And now we've gone full circle and we're back to blue and grey again!
