I was at Horsley and Clandon stations this morning and noticed that the platforms have stopping boards for 3-6 cars. Have I missed something - since the days of the 3 SUBs, what 3 car stock is expected (to be stopping at stations) on this route?

Are they new? This could have been for the 456's and 377's. A 4 car 455, or a 6 car 455+456 combination would have stopped at such a board. Did the 377/3's serve Guildford when Southern still ran their peak service? If there was a short form, those would have stopped there too.

377s could (and did operate) as 3, 4, 5 and 6 car formations on this route until Covid when Southern ran to Guildford.

Very mixed bag that service. The stops too. Some called at all stations between Effingham and Guildford as all of the SWR services do, some called only at London Road and some were non-stop.

Not sure if the 377/3s ever ran but the boards are still needed because they can run

There are a couple of photos on Flickr confirming that 377/3s did indeed make Guildford. None are single formations in these examples, but that's not to say it didn't happen (and it would of course be logical to cater for such an eventuality when running some form of 3 car unit down there).

For the 6-car boards, that could also be a 455+456. Not that I think they are ever normally used this way - I've only seen the 456s being used to make 10-car trains.

SWT/SWR typically used them in 4 car (456+456) on the Ascot/Guildford branch to start with, latterly moving to mainline suburban 8 car (456+456+455) or 10 car (456+455+455) formations. There was a period of semi-regular 6 cars on Sunday Hampton Court services though, which saw 456+456+456 or 456+455 formations, however 6 cars running elsewhere were pretty uncommon in my experience.

From December 2017 until March 2020 6-car 455+456 formations were common on weekends.

......huh. Well that was a waste of all the money spent on extending the platforms, then!
(but possibly post-covid demand patterns don't need them any more???)
They will be used IF the 701s actually get into service
