Hi all
Thanks for allowing me into this group.
I have been working on platform constructions of late and I was talking to the handback engineer trying to learn stuff from him and it's got me me asking certain things I didn't ask him.
What are the maximum and minimum gauge tolerances
What is meant by rail top?
What is the maximum and minimum can't (I think he said plus 12?)

Right now that's what I am thinking but I am sure I will have more questions if someone on here can help guide me I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

Jay

Hi Jay,

I am a handback engineer up to L4 for both maintenance and renewal sites.

Are you questions in relation to track through station platforms?
Gauge - tight and wide tolerances will depend on line speed and if it is static or dynamic, same for mean gauge and gauge variation.
These will be different for newly constructed track / track renewals and maintenance limits.
Top of rail will be where the height to the platform is measured, so the rail head. This is where your platform gauge will be to measure X and Y dimensions (height and distance)
For cant there will be a maximum but there are exceptions like the WCML where there is the TAD (Through Alignment design) due to tilting trains.

Can you access any Network Rail standards as part of your job?
If not ask someone at NR to get you the Track Design Handbook, Track Construction Handbook and Maintenance Standard TRK/001 modules 11 and 12.

Hope that helps to get you started.

Hi Boodiggy
Thank you for the reply. I will see if I can get a hold of these much appreciated in directing me.
My question about gauge was in general. The scenario we had was platform units going in on a 60mph line. He gave me the readings after and I get most of it but I am not sure about 1 reading....if I put the image on could.you give me an idea of what it means please?
Thanks once again for the response greatly appreciated

Thanks much appreciated
So I've put it into 2 screen shots 1st one is start of the run (using the trolley) so the middle column is 4.2 but then it goes up to like 50s up the line and then back down...can you explain what that means please and what the maximum and minimum it can be

Hi Jay, for cross level that is fine for 60mph. The one thing to check there would be the transition length is correct for the line-speed.
I will send you the other info as a DM.
Thanks

Hi buddy
Thank you very much in helping me so the middle column where it goes to 50odd is fine what does it indicate?

Where the cant goes higher it just shows you are in a curve. Your transition length and radius will be what determines the linespeed or limits it, due to rate of change and risk of train overturning (in basic terms - lots to designing geometry) but you can have high cant on low line speed lines.

Just sent you a bit more detail as a DM.

Morning buddy
Thank you very much I understand what you mean now with why the x level goes higher its not an issue it's just the curve it matters as you move along to indicate issues

Yep that is correct. The Amber trolley doesn’t give the curve radius but is good for gauge and cant.
