I'd doubt it - I have seen Virgin staff doing checks on the odd occasion round their trains too so maybe the companies do the checks themselves every now and again.

It wouldn't suprise me if the G4S staff have been given northern uniforms, FGW used to employ staff from a company called ICTS, they used to wear FGW uniforms.
Thankfully they were replaced by FGW staff in the end!

As suggested Nothern have now provided g4s with uniforms and name badges etc. The uniforms do have the q4s logo on them, other than that they are exectly the same as what we wear.

Seems a bit odd that Northern Rail would take out a contract with someone for RPIs for a Station that they Don't Run the sanme as I notice Northern Have There own Ticket Machines at Mip as well as Virgin but no FTEP or ATW Machines.

How does this work ?

Well, if they have a lot of trains there, then they surely have an interest in ensuring people pay their fares, no?

The ticketing facilities at a station with several operators will normally be run by one operator. In this case it seems Northern has added TVMs for whatever reason (perhaps to reduce the commission it has to pay to VWC).

PS the conventional abbreviation for Manchester Piccadilly is MAN.

The G4S staff used across the North West by Northern have been wearing Northern uniforms since Monday this week. The only difference is the name badge which does not have the persons name on, it just has the G4S logo, then says "working in partnership with" then has the Northern logo underneath.

They staff still wear the G4S id badges with their picture and name on round their necks as before, but the ones I have seen this week generally have it hidden behind the Northern uniform.

While it will not improve their ticket checking skills, which is notoriously dire, it does however mean they look a lot smarter!

I think you may be confused. Northern Rail are those who have contracted G4S to check tickets here. G4S are a contractor to Northern Rail, NOT Network Rail.

I've just been through there-have to report no change in the ticket checking policy-busy talking-but they seem less aggressive today!
