Afternoon all. What’s people opinion on applying for more than 1 position? I’m currently waiting for my DMI but haven’t heard anything in a while. I would like to apply for this position but don’t want it to jeopardise my current application. Bit of a tricky one. Look forward to hearing from you.
I have never applied before, and don't have any insight into how it works, but I don't think it should hurt. These companies know how many applicants they get per position when they advertise, and they should be understanding. The DMI you're waiting for, is that for the same company? If it is I'd perhaps be a bit more cautious, but I think it should be OK. Just be honest if they ever were to ask if you have applied for several positions.

Hi there. Thanks for the reply. Yes it’s for the same company but a different depot so a bit tricky. Think I’ll leave it for now and hopefully I’ll receive an email regarding my DMI soon. Thanks again.
That was quick. Have they heard that they've passed onto the next step, or that they have been unsuccessful? Trying to figure out if I should be pleased or worried that I haven't heard anything myself.

Perhaps when you attend the DMI you can ask the people interviewing you in question? I'd maybe ask something like "I've seen that you're advertising for trainees for these depots as well, is there any chance that you can consider me for those too?" If you word it right I think it'll only come across as positive, as it shows that you're keen and motivated enough to keep an eye on their other advertisements. If it's the same company you can't hide that you've applied for a different position, but on the flip side, you won't have to worry that they'll be offended that you've applied for a different company. As long as you're very open with them.
But let's wait until other people with more experience and insight have chimed in...

I'm also awaiting a DMI and saw these positions come up.
I started the application for one and then realised you have to go through the entire application process again, so sitting all the online questions etc.
I then decided against it as imagine you fail or dont get through the sift, I'm not sure how it would look.
Also, knowing you've passed the application stage it makes you wonder if you might as well submit the exact same answers etc as it was successful before but then does that come across lazy, I dont know ♂️

Yeah some good points. I’ve decided against it too just in case like you said I mess it up, also not sure it looks very good. You’re in the same position as me, how long have you been waiting?
They won’t process any application like this as they don’t want to get stung if you want to move back or relocate again to a depot nearer to where you have relocated from. There’s been many coastal drivers through the years get their key at a London depot then put in for a hardship move back to the coast. They get thousands of applications so can be very picky these days with what they want!
I received an email from GTR 2 weeks ago about the previous position available saying it's still 'open'. & Not to apply for the position coming up (This current available position).
Great advice! Patience is key... I applied for this role last year. I completely forgot i applied for this last year march(out of sight, out of mind). They notified me yesterday before the job ad went live, confirming my application will be processed after the job ad is closed..they aim to get successful applicants into assessment centres asap after sifting process from the sound of things. So literally waste no time apply! Apply!!

Therefore, I have to let this one slide by?
I believe this was the same email I got. Did you end up applying? Debating if I should...
GTR have a policy where any job application is closed when you apply for a new vacancy! It’s done automatically and even if you submit the same application it’s not guaranteed to get the same positive response

Where did you apply? and why would it stop you applying for this one? TOCs don't all get together and see who has applied for what and then rule them out.

I applied in September, been waiting about 9 weeks roughly since passing the assessment centre.
It honestly feels like forever but it seems in the train world its not, its a strange process as some have flew threw and already on courses, its one of those things I think about daily, every email that comes in I'm hoping its the DMI date etc..
At some point I will need to put it to the back of my mind and treat it as it comes when it come, not sure its healthy thinking/hoping about it daily.

Pretty much exactly the same as me. I applied in September too and passed my assessment in Feb. Sure the email will come soon mate, just a patience game atm. Fingers crossed not long now.

Not at all. It's simply a way to encourage a more diverse set of applicants. You'll see these type of recruitment adverts across many different industries. However they may be struggling to attract applicants from different ethnic groups. Everyone has to pass the same tests so it's it's always the best applicant for the job. It definitely helps to widen the net when looking to attract applicants. Be assured you are not at any disadvantage. Hope that helps.

Nothing wrong with this and personally I would apply for every vacancy that is suitable. Your pass results with OPC can be used with other TOC's/FOC's as long as they meet the standard.
The only area I would be mindful of is that some TOC's/FOC's use the CBI rather than the MMI. If this is the case, and you have already passed a DMI previously, then doing a CBI would over write the MMI pass. However there aren't that many TOC's or FOC's that use CBI. Speak to your assessment centre for further info on this point. But in general, nothing wrong with applying for more than one position.

Not sure why this would make a difference. I applied to the two different locations with a TOC a while back, the tests are the same, and it just means that you'll be considered for more that one location. In fact, some TOC's will ask at point of application if you're applying for more than one depot (Chiltern). That said, do what you feel is right for you. Just adding my 2 pence worth. Good luck.

I agree. The ones that have flown through probably just got there first. Limited spaces and as soon as they're filled up everyone else goes on hold until the next set of course dates are released. Pretty normal in the unpredictable world of railway recruitment.
I have been sitting on psychometric passes for the past 2 years. Definitely seems harder to get into the role compared to if you was a complete fresh starter.

Depends tbh, I've many pals that have had passes already from a previous toc but been awaiting a DMI or been in the talent pool and then applied for other applications and gone swiftly to the DMI after the sift. It seems imo that getting to an assessment center phase seems to be the difficult one. From what I've seen having the passes already if possible offers some benefit providing you get past sift as I assume it costs the company slightly less (as they aren't paying for you to sit these assessments) and thus providing you do well at DMI you're in a good position to the rest.
Tho there is indeed an element of luck regardless.
