I would like to be able to calculate the number of rail passengers that pass through a particular station each day/year, including not just those who don’t join or alight there, but also those passing through on services not even booked to call there. Is there any way of getting even a ball park figure for this?

(If anyone cares why I’d like to know, it occurred to me that for a small settlement on a main line, the vast majority of those passing through each day would be whizzing through on long distance services, and I was curious about just how vast that majority was.)

It could be done (or at least estimated) by using a combination MOIRA reports (revenue by arc which gives loads between stations and passengers joining & alighting by station) and gruntwork on a spreadsheet. Unfortunately I am retired and no longer have access to the data.

Clapham Junction would be the winner, but for small settlements then anywhere just outside London is going to win - West Byfleet, or Kings Langley perhaps?

Pilning and Polesworth would certainly see a huge number of passengers passing through.

Sheffield Station would be interesting in this debate as besides the Trains you also have people going to & from the Supertram services & local housing increasing the amount of people passing through.

Clapham Junc by a mile. Outside the London area it is probably Levenshulme on the approach to Manchester Piccadilly or Adderley Park on the WCML before Birmingham New Street.

A very back of the envelope calculation can be done using the ORR station usage data - but it would be based on lots of assumptions

In Scotland:
On Saturdays Paisley Gilmour Street is probably a strong contender due to being on the Ayrshire / Inverclyde line. Or Cardonald/Hillington E/Hillington W on the same line but closer to Glasgow.

Also on Saturdays if you include the mainlines at Newton (Lanarkshire) then that could also be a contender because it's at a junction between the WCML and Argyle / Cathcart Circle lines and is 10 minutes from Glasgow on Avanti. Though probably not as busy as Paisley.

And if we are talking predominantly long distance stuff then probably anywhere on the North Berwick line apart from North Berwick itself seeing as it's the ECML approach into Edinburgh Waverley.

Basically anywhere with a high number of carriages per hour with good passenger load.

I would suggest Wembley Central as a very strong contender.

All AWC Euston services, all LNR Euston services, the Southern service, The Overground and the Bakerloo

Similar for Finsbury Park, especially if you also count the tube.

For Scotland, I would guess Haymarket.

If the tube is counted, then King's Cross St Pancras combined with the two main line stations must be the main contender with 8 tube platforms, EMR, Thameslink, SE high speed, Eurostar, LNER, GN, not forgetting Hull Trains, Grand Central and Lumo.

London Bridge will be close, when taking into account all those passing through and those who use the station.
176 trains passed through Clapham J this morning between 730 and 830, vs 122 at London Bridge. If you include the underground they must be pretty close to identical, at least in terms of theoretical capacity
