Hi
Just today I got a ticket irregulatory report in transpeenine railway.
I had a railcard discounted ticket but no railcard.
I am 29 and currently on student visa.this has happened first time. Now I was travelling with my friend who had booked both tickets. Now while the officer was asking for details I panicked and out of panic I gave him the picture of my friends (same who was travelling with me)expired railcard (from an old chat). the same friend already presented her renewed railcard before same officer. I couldn't clearly understand the situation and hence presented that image. I immediately bought railcard same say.
I am hence replying with below.

Yours sincerely,

Welcome to the forum!

What will happen next is that the railway will write to you. This will probably be in the next few weeks, but it could take up to six months.

It's important that you reply to the letter so it's important that you get the letter. The way to do this is to arrange for your post to be redirected to your new address. See https://www.royalmail.com/personal/receiving-mail/redirection#top for details of how this works.

Don't worry too much and I suggest you read others' experiences of similar circumstances posted in this section of the forum.
I suggest that you do not refer to having a "valid ticket" because if you bought a railcard-discounted ticket without holding a valid railcard, then your ticket was not valid. Only words, but it may be important to be accurate.

I am also expected to change address in 2 months.
Welcome to the forum. If you are indeed planning on moving address in the next month or two, it will probably be a good idea to set up a Royal Mail postal redirection, to minimize the chances of you not receiving important correspondence, such as the letter you're likely to receive from the train company's investigation team.

I would also suggest contacting TPE to advise them of the new address when you move. This shows them that you are acting in good faith regarding the matter. Contact details should be on TIR.

Not a bad shout that, if the matter hasn't been resolved by then.

On that day, I had booked a ticket with a railcard discount but unfortunately, I did not have my railcard with me. I fully acknowledge that this was a mistake on my part, and I deeply regret my aactions.
In your first post you state you didn't actually have a railcard as it had expired. If this is the case (you did not hold a valid railcard at the time of travel) then it would not be wise to say you simply did not have it with you.

I see you say in the next paragraph that you bought a new railcard the same day as soon as you realised. It would be wise alter the part where you say you didn't have it with you ,to you didn't realise it had expired.

In your original post, you were worried that the railway's letters wouldn't reach you because you were about to change address. This letter has reached you, but when you reply don't forget to tell the railway your new address.

Good observation. So in that case I should mention below?

On that day, I had booked a ticket with a railcard discount but unfortunately, I did not have a valid railcard with me. I fully acknowledge that this was a mistake on my part, and I deeply regret my actions.

Give them an address where you can be contacted for the next few weeks, and if you move within the UK, make sure you set up redirection or find someone you can trust to forward mail.

I hope you won't mind me asking - did you fail to check that the Railcard was valid, or did you travel knowing it had expired?

Make sure you do not write anything untrue.

On the word "unfortunately" - if you didn't know it had expired, say that. Either way, the reality is that it is your fault, rather than fortune.

You can ask if they would contact you by email. They might regard that as helpful.

You can ask your student union, if there is one, for help with any worries and perhaps for some free legal help. A student union might help you find advice/reassurance on whether this could affect your visa. If there is any real chance of that, you may be wise to get legal advice. The risk may depend on how the staff member perceived your behaviour at the time. Often companies will agree to stop the case if the passenger pays an amount for the fare and investigation - I am just making these points so that you can be well-informed.

I am writing in response to the regulatory ticket I received for my travel on 29 May
Probably more helpful would be, "Thank you for your letter of 2 June (your reference number: XXXXX)"

take full responsibility for my actions.

If it was a mistake, the apology would be for failure to check, rather than for actions. Or are you referring to showing the wrong railcard - does your original post mean that in a panic you deliberately showed your friend's (expired?) railcard, and if so what happened after that?

to be very clear - I had a railcard discounted ticket but I did not have a railcard. When asked about it in panic i presented an old image of my friends expired railcard but immediately after that I bought one on my name. So if you can suggest me what sentence I should actually use to avoid any further action. I am obviously willing to pay ticket charges and fine and thus happened first time with me

Basically stating that you purchased a railcard discounted ticket, not realising your railcard had expired until it was asked for by the inspector. That you have since renewed your railcard as soon as you realised it had expired, and perhaps that you have taken steps to ensure it doesn't happen again (such as setting a notification of the expiry date on your phone calendar etc)

I didn't own a railcard till then but in panic during that situation though i cooperated but showed the staff that old image of my friends railcard which had an expiry date of April (later got to know that my friend had already renewed that April end). Here is where I messed up :(

If you showed a picture of your friends railcard when your ticket was checked... why did you have a picture of your friends railcard available to show? Was this a picture on your phone or an old one they lent to you?

In your previous posts you say you realised both your railcards had expired, but your friend had renewed theirs - that's quite a difference to not havinh one at all!

In the first post you said (my bold):

So just to confirm, you didn't hold a railcard at all before then? However on the day you renewed?
Yes I didn't own a railcard till then. Had that image of my friends from one of my old chats. However I purchased one same day. Please help

It was from one of the old chats but I don't know in that situation I panicked and I showed him that image. Immediately after he gave me a ticket I purchased one.

You initially messed up by travelling using an inappropriately discounted ticket without an accompanying valid, in date, railcard. Without the railcard, you did NOT have a valid ticket. Despite what you initially claimed in post #1, seems you've never previously had a railcard, expired or otherwise.

You then compounded the situation by attempting to claim that another person's railcard was yours.

Unfortunately, buying a railcard after the event won't make the problem you're facing go away.

It might just be a mitigating factor indicating that you won't do the same again.

Suggest you get your somewhat contradictory story straight before responding to the train company.

Be useful if you could re-post your amended draft response, omitting any references to non-existent expired railcards.

i am seeking help. Please help me. I am willing to pay fines and ticket charges but dint want to take it ahead

Another thing to note here is me and my friend(whose railcard image I have shown) were both travelling together and that same renewed railcard image she have shown him while I showed the expired one. Could I say I panicked and hence showed him that image? My friend was also present there. And she booked both of our discounted tickets (with 2 railcards)

Understood, but it helps if you don't come on here with an inconsistent story.

As previously, would now be useful if you could re-post your amended draft response to the train company, omitting any references to non-existent expired railcards.

The apology should be for travelling using a railcard discounted ticket when you didn't actually have any railcard at the time).

(And that you've endeavoured to ensure that you don't do this again in the future by having now bought a railcard).

Thanks all for helping out on my situation. This is what I intend to reply to railway team which doesn't mention anything about the messed up railcard situation since I didn't own any railcard when ticket for created.

Hello Team,

I am writing in response to the regulatory ticket I received for my travel on 29 May. I would like to sincerely apologize for the incident and take full responsibility for my actions.

On that day, I had booked a ticket with a railcard discount but unfortunately, I did not have railcard with me. I fully acknowledge that this was a mistake on my part, and I deeply regret my actions.

I would like to assure you that this was the first and only time such an incident has occurred. I apologize for any inconvenience or disruption this may have caused to TransPennine Railway and its staff. I am more than willing to pay any additional charges or fines that may be associated with this incident. Please let me know the appropriate steps to take to resolve this matter, and I will promptly comply with your instructions.

Once again, I sincerely apologize for my actions and any inconvenience caused. I appreciate your understanding and hope that you can consider this as an isolated incident. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Yours sincerely,
It appears you are still saying you didn't have a railcard with you, when infact you didn't have one at all.

You should definitely add in that you immediately purchased a new railcard after the incident (if you did infact do so)

Yes I did not have any railcard but after the situation I mmediately purchased a railcard. Does below look fine? Thanks for your help

On that day, I had booked a ticket with a railcard discount but , I did not have railcard. I fully acknowledge that this was a mistake on my part, and I deeply regret my actions. I would like to bring to your attention that immediately after this incident, I realized the seriousness of the situation and the importance of adhering to railway regulations. In an effort to rectify my mistake, I purchased a new railcard on the same day.

That seems better to me, the experts will be along to give further suggestions/advice soon, but that seems to reflect what you have told us so far!
