Six trains damaged near Kirkstall Forge

Shooter at Kirkstall Forge probably the same personage who shot out all the glass panels on the footbridge over the last few years making it much bleaker.

Maybe the same folk that seem to routinely target bus shelters & the few remaining phone boxes.

Last week our trains were the target of an air pellet gun attack! Not only is this stupid, it is dangerous and could have been much worse. Thousands of pounds of damage, delays and resource was caused by this incident. 1/2

Such incidents appear to me to be less common than they were 30-40 years ago (possibly a result of the upgrade of boundary fencing?).

When I commuted weekly between South Wales and Cheshire in 1977 my train was stoned five times in six weeks in the southern edges of Birmingham.

In the last 10 years I can scarcely recall a single incident.

Though I appreciate this is personal experience and anecdotal.

I think that is generally true though and possibly because of what you say about fencing. I seem to recall it quite often in the 80's with bricks thrown from bridges and air rifle attacks amongst other brainless things.

Raising bridge parapets has been a big thing over the last few decades too.

This kind of stuff was inevitable after the then Prime Minister chose to sack 30,000 police officers, When was the last time you saw a police officer in your street ?

This kind of stuff has always happened to a degree. There aren't enough police officers to continuously patrol every road in the UK and never will be, so there is and will always be opportunity for those who get off on destruction and violence.

We used to have an old Devon remedy for people who tinkered with other peoples property..the pitchfork.
But that was a long time ago. There is not much static graffiti on the lines I work & the trains are clear of it, but when I used to work to Paddington the trackside "art work" increased the closer we got to the capital. Not sure what the remedy is. But good fencing helps although the stations are always vulnerable.
