last week I had 54515 on an X27 to Glasgow; vehicle got its brakes locked on just round the corner from Buchanan St and had to walk the rest of the way. Had the same vehicle on the X55 yesterday, the exact same thing happened just round the corner from Edinburgh bus station, though luckily the driver was able to get the coach moving again. The fact the vehicle still has the same serious problem 6 days after I first witnessed it is not acceptable.
That's absolutely shocking!

Just to let you know, 47260 is falsey tracking as 27605.

An E300 couldn't fit on the 206

The Arbroath 2015 Volvo B5LH / Alexander Dennis Enviro400 MMCs always breakdown, are slow and can hardly climb hills.
That's a bit of a generalisation, only the ones which haven't had their Hybrid batteries replaced are like this. The ones with new/reconditioned batteries can shift nicely!

Arbroath seem to be getting quite a lot.
Do you know if any Solos have been withdrawn and these are replacements?
I would imagine the two "new" SRs will replace two of the oldest Solos at the depot

[...] check lights always on on the dash [...]
Good luck finding a Volvo without a check light on!

Once, due to an SR breaking down and a Solo being waterballooned in one day lol.

Has anyone tried the former Strathtay Solos (47250-47260) and do you like them?

47367 *might* be next to be withdrawn, she hasn't moved in ages

If there is one area that Stagecoach need to improve on fast it is definitely maintenance. I used to visit Fife a lot from Glasgow but I've been putting it off until the number of vehicle faults drops massively.

47812 is tracking falsely as 13042, as I was on her today on the 206!
Tracking was very dodgy as you can tell if you see bustimes.org

== Doublepost prevention - post automatically merged: ==

If Stagecoach East Scotland are going for the "professional look" with their new dull timetables, maybe SPELL correctly. Glamis is spelt "Slamis" on my local 20/21 | 22 timetable.

== Doublepost prevention - post automatically merged: ==

"Dull timetables, why?"
The 20/21 | 73 timetables used to be covered with jolly stuff like trees and flowers.... look at them now... :-/

== Doublepost prevention - post automatically merged: ==

This is carelessness, leaving a spelling error on the front page of a timetable.

Believe it or not, 54515, which has the brake issues, didn't have a check light on when I was on board yesterday!

Very much the same with the liveries as well, in my opinion. The loss of route branding which has come with the transition to the 2020 liveries makes vehicles look quite dull, and so far attempts from down south to apply route branding to the 2020 templates has not looked very good in comparison to the previous Beachball variations.

I'm curious - what's everyone's favourite bus or bus type from the Stagecoach East Scotland fleet?

== Doublepost prevention - post automatically merged: ==

I'll start off with a controversial opinion - my favourite is the Optare Solo and more specifically the former Strathtay ones (47250-47260). I just love them and they can be quite speedy! A great route for them is the 206, the direction heading towards Ethiebeaton!
Now... my favourite?
Probably 47260!

For one of the first times ever, Service 206 has not been run by an Optare Solo. I saw it this morning on bustimes.org, I thought it was just a tracking error as per usual. I was proved wrong! https://t.ly/iQjr

Despite their often poor maintenance, I've always been a fan of the Panther LEs - I find them more comfortable than Elites, in terms of ride quality and temperature control, and I also just prefer low floor vehicles - they feel less cramped. In terms of actual buses and not coaches, my personal favourite types would have to be ALX400s and E200EVs - an ALX400 is just a classic 'bus' to me and the 200EVs are clean, modern, and fast, though I don't have any specific favourite vehicles.

This may contrast with your username but I'm personally not a fan of Solos, they're getting pretty old now and they've always sounded rather ill whenever I've been on board one, though that may be more of a reflection of St Leonards' maintenance standard and a love for Solos is definitely not that rare, from what I've seen. My local routes are the Dunfermline town routes and whenever a Solo would get put on the 5, it would always struggle with the hills and crawl up at around 20mph. The same hills are no trouble for the 200EVs!

I understand what you mean, they can be quite dead if I'm being honest! I was on SR 47812 yesterday, although not a standard Solo, was pretty dead on the 206. If you're ever up in the Dundee/Angus area, you should have a go on their Solos.

But they can be fast too.

I'm not such a big fan of EVs, I much prefer listening to a loud engine roar as a bus enthusiast!

But in terms of looks, yes, I will admit the E200EVs look pretty stunning! Especially the ones with green text around the side which say "Dunfermline Electric City!"

and sometimes imho, they can be quite fancy to ride!

In reply to a post from the Dundee, Angus & Perthshire Bus Route Suggestions thread:
In terms of the X7 route I am surprised why it doesn't connect from the Aberdeen side - either the ARI or the airport? (I have always wondered that it connects PRI and Ninewells but doesn't cover ARI), it could have been a hospital link between hospitals, am I right to say from Aberdeen it uses the new bypass than the one that megabus/citylink use?
It would be pointless, that's why. Perth and Ninewells both fall under NHS Tayside so there is a need for a service connecting them both, whereas Aberdeen is under NHS Grampian therefore most of the people who do use the X7 in to Aberdeen would likely never need to go to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. Additionally, there are frequent direct connections in Aberdeen city centre to both the hospitals and Airport that are probably faster than extending the X7 would be.

Stagecoach did try a Service 747 linking Montrose, Stonehaven, Aberdeen Airport and Ellon in 2019 however it just carried fresh air. Bus demand to Aberdeen Airport isn't that high, the 727 rarely has more than a dozen passengers from the Airport terminal itself.

Both the X7 and Citylink services follow the A92 in to Aberdeen; no bus services use the new bypass at all.

Most of these solos will most likely carry on for a few more months until the new Electric buses turn up.

I am currently on 54366 given its only a 72 plate I'm surprised by the condition its in, the interior is quite dirty and it already suffers from the "Plaxton roof wobble" that seems to plague triaxle Panthers and Elites.

I wonder what the change is to Fife services 19 and 747? Is the 747 getting an increase in frequency for the summer?

They may only be minor timetable changes but any major changes for the 19 could consist of restoring or partially restoring pre-Covid frequencies or cutting the route further, e.g. cut the 19A to run only between Dunfermline and Ballingry. I hope the latter doesn't happen but given some of the drastic changes to other operators' services after the withdrawal of Scottish government funding, I wouldn't be surprised. Time will tell.

I'd say the 747 is far more likely to increase in frequency than decrease, perhaps it'll return to an every 20min frequency.

I've not been to Fife for a few months but the last time I was there, most buses I used weren't particularly busy other than the X24 and X27. I do plan on going again during the summer but it's very dependent on the reliability of services improving. Their Twitter just seems to be a wall of reliability problems due to "technical issues" on a daily basis.

That tends to be the trend I see as well, though passengers seem to be picking up as we head into summer. I live in the Dunfermline area and it's unfortunate to see brand new electric buses on the town routes carrying relatively few passengers, though passenger numbers are much more healthy on the routes connecting the orbital villages such as Oakley, Valleyfield, Dalgety Bay and Kelty. Services such as the 4/4A, 7, 7B/7C, 8 and 19 always tend to be fairly busy from my experience. I was on a 7B the other morning into Dunfermline from Dalgety Bay and it was full and standing by the time the bus reached the outskirts of the city proper. Other routes can be very quiet, such as the 6 and 85.

Reliability definitely seems to be a lot better in the south of Fife than the north - Dunfermline and Cowdenbeath depots seem to have not been affected by driver shortages and the like compared to Aberhill and Perth, for example. Very rarely do I see buses cancelled.

The coastal end of Fife really helps in the summer months because people just flock to it immediately. My great grandparents stayed in Leven until the end of their days and every single time I went up to visit them during the summer I could barely move for the amount of people.

When I'm in Fife now, I tend to go to Dunfermline, Kirkcaldy, Glenrothes and Leven and the order just depends on which of the X24 and X27 I get from Glasgow. The 7 route is a really great journey for taking in the scenery so I've done that end to end a couple of times too. It would be good if the X26 came back eventually but I think it won't now given that it's been so long without it. It would definitely help capacity between Glasgow and Dunfermline anyway.

The reliability has certainly improved tenfold regarding driver shortages but technical issues with vehicles, especially coaches, is definitely still a problem. The Dundee/Arbroath area seems to be the worst for them, though. Out of the companies I've used, Stagecoach's maintenance in East Scotland is by far the worst. I hope that they eventually improve it but I'm very skeptical at the moment.

747 is indeed becoming every 20mins, However the no19 just getting retimed to try and resolve the rather late running ( sounds like the Tayway no73..)

I agree with others, It's the Express network that badly needs to see some improvements.

Just noticed Stagecoach's announcement of changes which includes this line:
Also, services 85 and 86 will be cancelled.
That's it - a very nonchalant way of announcing the withdrawal of two services, in my opinion. Though these services were always relatively quiet from my experience - it's amusing when a decker is allocated to the 85, a route which struggles to get enough passengers to fill a minibus, let alone a double decker. Service updates article is here: https://www.stagecoachbus.com/servi...rticle?SituationId=ID-19/05/2023-10:47:42:010

I'm surprised they haven't tried to cut the 6 again - though it got them some bad press last time so they may not want to risk that again.

Definitely needed, the reliability of the 19 has been very poor since the changes. I haven't caught the 747 during daytime in a while but early morning services tend to get a fair few passengers which seems be a sign that an increase in daytime frequency was needed.

It would be good to see some more investment in the Express network but it doesn't seem like Stagecoach are willing at this point in time.

It's because the service is interworked with a School run.

The two questions which need to be looked at are:

Is the timetable being revised to give the Glasgow Section a 20min headway, which it really needs at time - If the service is going back up to every 20mins where would any extra coaches come from?
Or is it just giving more layover time at Glasgow?

I dont think they have enough coaches to able to run the existing service levels, have they lost coaches since the Glasgow services were previously every 20 minutes?

You're right - forgot about that.

There are more than enough coaches for all express services - the issue is that so many are off the road at one time. There are around 40 Plaxton Elites based at Glenrothes and Aberhill for express work and 20 Plaxton Panther LEs at Dunfermline and Perth, but today for example twelve Elites and seven Panther LEs were in the depot out of service. A few have been off the road for a while - a couple haven't tracked in a couple of months and 54109 hasn't tracked since January. The express routes usually worked by Elites have a total vehicle requirement of 34 (if my calculations are correct), theoretically leaving six spare vehicles. However as mentioned twelve were not in service today, which seems to a regular occurrence, leading to 400MMCs, 200MMCs, E300s and/or whatever is available being allocated.

If the frequency of the Glasgow expresses was increased to a 20 minute headway, Stagecoach would need to find around 5 more vehicles - it's possible they could find the vehicles by having a few diagrams worked by Rennies at Cowdenbeath - that's if their coaches aren't all being used for school work or they were able to swap on a decker, or by swapping coaches and local buses around - e.g. the 23 and X52 could become become entirely bus operated if vehicles are available, freeing up a few coaches. Either that or try and bring in as many spare 400MMCs as possible.

Some changes have now been registered for the X24 and X27 for June 26th and also more for elsewhere for July 3rd:
  • PM0000004/1037 Registered

    FIFE SCOTTISH OMNIBUSES LTD
    Route: Kinross to Tilicoultry
    Service number: F202 (202)
    Service type: Normal Stopping
    Effective date: 03 Jul 2023
I wonder if this means Stagecoach will be taking over the 202 tender from Bay Travel? A cancellation was registered for the 202 in February but it was listed as effective from the same date it was received and is still running.
