Grand Central stopping short 20/05/23

I was on 1N93 Kings Cross to Sunderland yesterday, and about 20 minutes before departure, it was announced that due to a fault on the train, it would only be going as far as Hartlepool, with replacement buses (which didn't show up!) arranged for the final part of the journey. Would anyone know what kind of fault on a train would allow it to go almost 250 miles, but not finish the last 15 miles, especially one known about prior to departure?

Yes, it was cancelled due to a train fault, just that that fault was on a different train!
