I am travelling tomorrow, from Newcastle to Saltburn, so just want to make sure the train is running.

What is the best way to do this please?

Journey details

Depart Newcastle at 10:31 to Middlesbrough, then get 12:21 train to Saltburn

Return, depart Saltburn at 16:57 to Middlebrough, then get 17:30 train to Newcastle

thank you

Realtime Trains is as good a source as any

Those trains seem to be scheduled to run according to that. But obviously there's no guarantee that any of those trains won't be cancelled or delayed at short notice so you still need to check on the day, preferably at regular intervals.

I see there are two trains scheduled to leave Saltburn after my one, at 17:57 and at 18:57 with connections from Middlesbrough up to Newcastle .. surely they couldn't cancel all of them.

As a matter of interest, if I did get stuck in Saltburn, is that just my bad luck or do Northern Rail have to assist me to get to my final destination?

maybe I should phone tomorrow and ask NR, the, if they have bad news, surely i would be able to cancel and receive a full refund

Is it? I've known trains to be shown on there on the morning I was due to travel, despite other source saying the train was cancelled the night before (this was Crewe to Manchester on Avanti a few months ago).

I'd advise checking other sources too.

You won't be stuck at Saltburn; trains are scheduled at 1649, 1657, 1757, 1849, 1857 etc and if trains were unable to operate, rail replacement buses would be provided (there are also service buses if you prefer to abandon your journey by train and claim a refund and pay the bus fare instead)

If a train you intend to catch is cancelled and you choose not to travel, you can get a full refund. If this occurs on the return portion of a return ticket, and you make your way back by bus, it would be 50% of the return ticket cost.

I'd just recommend keeping an eye on the Northern JourneyCheck page: https://www.journeycheck.com/northernrail/

It'll tell you about cancellations, part-cancellations and delays.

I wouldn't recommend phoning up - most call centres just have access to the same information that we do as passengers.

OP here ... back home now ... all went to plan

Well Done Northern Rail
Did you catch the Times Best Places to Live in the UK prog earlier this evening? Whitley Bay came 3rd in the whole country! Very envious of people who actually live there, I visit as often as possible and it never disappoints.

Sorry, I missed the programme, but yes, it's quite a nice place to live.

Fortunately, after many many years without funding, the seafront has been given a major facelift... just a pity that Saint Mary's Lighthouse (in W/Bay) is in such a sorry state. It's shown on all nearly all forms of publicity for the Borough, but it looks awful .. the outside certainly needs a coat of paint, or two or three .. and the inside .. don't even mention that .. it's in a very sorry state
