With the news in the EMR 170 updates thread that 501 will be leaving for EMR at the end of next week, can we expect to see 196s start a full weekday diagram at some point next week, or will it just be 170/172 formations to cover for now?

Have the issues with the sharp bins not been fixed? Just put something in the bin on 196008, and it slammed shut against my finger resulting in cuts.

The 196 departures that happened today from Snow Hill were the 0836 and 1236. Not sure if the 196s would return again as I don't know the diagram its on.

I have noticed on RTT that there is an out and back diagram (5T90 & 5T91) from Tyseley to Nuneaton via Leamington Spa this week, running on Tuesday and Friday. I assume this might be the start of driver training on this route?

Driver training has apparently started according to a guard I just spoke to on a Nuneaton-Leamington service, but it’s been delayed due to strikes.

20:41 to Great Malvern. If you know who to use Realtime trains it’s quite easy to work out.
Thanks, I couldn't remember the Saturday diagram.

3 left, 1 to transfer on the 14th, the other 2 on the 26th.

I would imagine the 196 diagram should follow to allow the units to be released, nicking more 172s from the SHL to cover would be unpopular with some commuters
I'd imagine so too, however if it is right that 501 is moving across next week, they wouldn't be able to run a double set because they'd need a spare or on maintenance. Therefore was asking whether it is likely for 196s to start weekdays this week or next.

I’d imagine having a spare 170 wouldn’t be essential, if one failed they could just swap it for a 172, bit like how failed 196s were swapped for 170s during the initial introduction on Shrewsbury’s.

170’s are moving the on the 12th,19th & 25th. The double 170 diagram was a 170 & 172 last week.

Initially from the new timetable there are 2 circuits booked for 2 x 196/0 , 1 booked for 2 x 172 & 2 booked for a 172/3. Obviously as the new timetable progresses the diagrams will slowly swap over to 196’s by September, by which time driver training should be complete at Worcester & the 4 cars should have had door controls fitted in the middle vehicles. I think conductor training is more or less finished & driver training is about half way through. Obviously more drivers to train than conductors & driver training is 6 days instead of 2 for conductors. If anything delays further introduction it won’t be down to traincrew more likely unit availablity with waiting for the door panels to be fitted. The quicker they are fitted the quicker 2 cars can be released for Leamington - Nuneaton

Thanks for this detailed answer :). Do you know which the 196 diagrams are likely to be please, trying to plan a trip in the May half term? Thanks.

There are three units left to my knowledge—see the answer below:

170’s are moving the on the 12th,19th & 25th. The double 170 diagram was a 170 & 172 last week.

I’m not sure what the identifies of the remaining units are, though I recall travelling on 501 and 506 last month so they may be among the final three.

One thing I’ve noticed is that the announcements on the 196s appear to be different than from their predecessors. Instead of “Welcome aboard this WMR service to D, calling at B, C and D” they’re “Welcome aboard this WMR service to D, the next stop will be B”. Is this part of that announcement reduction scheme?

I think it’s the same formula as what the 323s have had for a few years, so I’d imagine that it’d have little to do with reducing announcements.

I do think it’s a bit odd that the 172s announce every station call whilst the doors are open.

No. The 'D, calling B C D' announcements are only made after departing principle stations on the route. The other ones are made at every station, including principles.

I know on our routes, were were asked to start doing manual announcements in the same format, from about this time last year.

Personally, it's just too much noise. You're listening to an automated system doing around 70-80 announcements in an hour and a half journey. Inevitably, the volume is also set super high, so makes for a really uncomfortable journey.

Oh indeed, I do think it’s a good change. But what I mean is the 170/172s did/do announce every station after every station, whereas the 196s primarily use the ‘next stop’ one. But am I right in saying that the Turbostars could in theory do the latter method, and it’s only being done on the 196s because of a policy change?

They only do the full run through at certain stations. Moor Street, Snow Hill, Stourbridge - places like that. Reckon it must work off a list of stations where it's possible to interchange because, oddly, it does it at Small Heath, Tyseley and Wilnecote as well...

170s don't do any automatic announcements.
The 196s do what they do because the guard isn't supposed to be there (they're all ordered and built to DOO spec), so the auto announce must cover everything.

Sadly, the guard, nor the driver, can disable or alter the volume or frequency if them, so passengers are effectively shouting into the wind about their irritations

Interesting. That's absolutely ridiculous they can't be turned off or altered, what if the train needs to make a last minute alteration and skip a station or something of that sort?
