Can a simpler station be built for HS2 at Euston?

All of these are highly undesirable and further the idea that it's an utter white elephant. Do it properly, or don't bother at all.
Of course they're "undesirable". But the question is are they more or less "undesirable" than sinking £7Bn at 2023 prices on a station that can only handle 17 trains per hour, all of which will be only half full? White elephant seems a pretty good description to me.

The place to save money is the building, not the operational side. Just put some basic canopies up and a cheap modular building.

In particular, the idea of an OOC-Euston standee shuttle can get firmly in the sea.

What on earth would be the point oO there's already a shuttle from OOC to places people want to go...
I think some people fear that the Elizabeth Line wouldn't be able to cope on its own, although rather than have a shuttle go to Euston, perhaps upgrading the Overground to Clapham Junction and Willesden Junction would be a better spend.

Move East Acton a bit closer, integrate Willesden Jct somehow - it's what, 750m away? never noticed before but the Central line corridor in the area appears to have been four track once. If you're spending money anyway branch off the Bakerloo & have that run to OOC. Not short of alternative routes in the area :)

Well, if you really want a cheap design, I've done some drawing on a spare envelope... in crayon.

A simpler station could be built, but, given all the furore about the current large opaque box at Euston, how would building another one fit in with that dynamic? And how well would a restricted station be able to sort out passenger numbers?
By all means, tone down some of the embellishments - but, given it is the cheek HS2 turns to the capital, it could really do without being slapped. The best buildings are functional and beautiful - the works of Charles Holden spring to mind, as well as the station at Wemyss Bay.
If an effort can be made to get the thing open, I don't think it'll take long for people to forget the spiralling costs and mismanagement. And, in terms of a more restricted building - surely it's better to go through the pain of overspending in order to soothe issues that may arise, rather than avoiding pain now but having a massive headache later?

Agreed, people have very convenient memories. It's less than a year since the Lizzie opened fully having caused years of calls to cheapen it to fit a skimpy budget. Now there are complaints that the line is inadequate for demand it faces.
The comparison might align even further, as so many of the loudest complainers are comparing the station with their local terminus in areas that will never see anything like the volume of passengers and other visitors that any of the London examples do. I suspect that their experience would be limited to the occasional visit to the capital, hardly enough to judge how a major station in a global city works.
Euston isn't one the busiest stations in London because it doesn't have as many commuters, - a significant proportion of its footfall being long distance business (still) and leisure/holiday traffic both of which also attract seeing off and meeting by non-travellers. Just like Paddington, that requires many public facilities that can't be fulfilled with a classic 'Blackpool South' design. ;)-

Euston is most probably the most important railway station in the UK, even if it isn't quite as busy as Waterloo or Victoria, because of what it connects. So I wouldn't skimp operationally, but you can build an attractive and functional modern station out of fairly cheap materials, so it's fine to skimp there even if we might later put some piles in and build the planned mini town on top.

I am surprised we can't get a developer in on the basis of "we want this station building, you can otherwise stick what you like on top for free", though. Most towns have all the bus shelters provided for very low cost or nothing by JCDecaux who fund them by putting ads up, for instance.

It certainly would not be "whatever you want" on top. The local community (constituency MP Sir Keir Starmer!) will definitely have a view as would Camden Council and Sadiq Khan.

Within reason and planning law of course! The point was that the developer would make a fortune selling housing and business premises, and could recoup the cost of building another (better laid out) Birmingham New Street and make a nice profit quite easily.

If only they had gone with the option where there was tunnel through Euston to somewhere south of the Thames, then the whole thing would be done already. Yes, it would mean potentially several miles more tunnelling, but Euston HS2 would just be a (relatively) simple box and wouldn't need as many platforms (since the train prep would be done elsewhere).

That is the basic problem, when it was decided to add Old Oak Common station, the location of Euston as a Terminus became dreadful location. Just needed a four platform (two big islands) through station linked to a tunnel and terminus on other side of London

Could even have built each island under two parallel East-West roads (of which there are many in London). Based on Elizabeth line prices each pair of platforms plus station building would have been about £1bn to built (plus a fit out depending on how expensive you wanted to do it), and tunnels would have been not much more than tunnelling to Euston.

Would have been lot easier to find a big site to end in East London or South London than Camden. Could even have continued to somewhere like Gatwick. Instead looking like will end up with half a bodge.

It's not as simple as "drive a few piles"! There's a reason that the foundations of a typical project take as long, if not longer than the above-ground structure. The sub-surface work (foundation, location of services, etc.) are completely dependent on the needs of the building above.

Particularly when there are multiple extant underground structures in the vicinity.

Of course, - just like it is in Belgravia or Holland Park. I suspect that the 'planning' aims of the present Government are far different to those of the MP for Holborn & St Pancras and the Mayor of London

Is there anything in the material used in the Euston Station build that is particularly extravagant, - after all, concrete foundations and structures all need to be fit for purpose according to current regulations?

Really? Crossrail cost nearly £20billion. How would reaching Gatwick through Cross London tunnels cost less than going to Euston. Where is there a sensible station site on the south side of London?

Given that the admitted to cost of Euston is now approaching £5bn.......

There is always the yard adjacent to Grosvenor railway bridge.

Indeed, Euston is clearly now unaffordable, but so is every conceivable alternative that involves a station beyond Old Oak Common.

Some affordable approach needs to be found which makes Old Oak Common the permanent end of the line, with plans otherwise unchanged, so no desperate replanning or rebuilding. The service can then be limited to the capacity of the platforms there.

As for the yard at Grosvenor Railway Bridge, I can't see any way you could get under the District and Victoria lines to terminate trains there near to the surface, nor how you could conceivably afford a tunnel from Old Oak Common.

Tunnels are comparatively cheap.

They don't come free though.
Indeed, not. But if Euston is too expensive as a terminus, just keep going with the tunnel to somewhere else cheaper. Euston becomes a simple two platform box station.

Does that solve the problem? Isn't it easier just to put some reversing sidings east of Old Oak Common, possibly in a short length of tunnel, to work like those at Westbourne Park and forget about Euston altogether?

You don't, for one, need a full trainshed, canopies are fine.

You don't need a big bridge over the lines for centre access - it's easier if you do have that, but plenty of European termini have long trains where you access at one end.

If that happens HS2 should be cancelled and the land sold. A line that just runs from Birmingham to the west London suburbs is close to useless. It needs to go to central London or it simply isn't worth bothering.

What I would like for the station even though money wouldn't allow it would be a combined HS2 and existing train shed. Make the Bus Station and Taxi Rank be off Melton St.
I would love a recreated Doric Arch as a bit of a Screw you to the "planners" of the 60's even though it would never happen

Yes, it does. We still get a central London station, with the connections to the tube, etc. But it requires a lot less construction and, as long as the tunnel is deep enough, it still leaves the option for above-site development at a later date.

It'd be great for the station to be fully redeveloped, as was the original plan, but there isn't the money.

That Arch was pig-ugly and in the way. I just don't get why people keep harking back to the thing. Leave it in the canal.

Hardly true. It is the proposed position for the first few years in any case, actual period unknown.

Where it becomes the permanent position is if the tunnels to Euston don't get built.

A matter of opinion.

It being in the way isn't, to be fair. It would have left P8-11 as 4-car platforms.

If the intention is not to fund it, cancel the project. A white elephant is not worth the money.

The bare minimum for it to be worthwhile is Phase 1 in full and Phase 2A. Without that it's a total waste of money.

Ideally, build all of it.

Well if you accept a Blackfriars bridge type solution with platforms over the river, you could just dive into a 4% gradient straight from the end of the platform and try to get depth before you run out of width to the north.
