Why have Northern done the digital train mods in this way? I understand the units that were refurbed before digital mods started but units going through the refurb program should get them then instead of later. Have a different contractor for the digital mods? Send them there immediately afterwards. Ridiculous.
Nothing ridiculous about it. Some units, for example those still at Wolverton, will be refurbed before release. Others already in the business will get done by A N Other somewhere at contract award. Even more units still not with Northern have to be added into that program at some point. Then you have to engage with the digital people, on previous units Yellow Rail, to enable digital to be fitted, which will require business cases drawn up etc. and a team which will by now have been disbanded since all Northern digital mods have been completed (just about). All takes time and sometimes cannot be planned as a "one stop shop" event.

When was the last time something that wasn't a 156 ran the Barton line? Presumably a 153 back when they had those, and they probably never put 158s much on it then, either. Has a 170 been in service on that route at all? Only asking because as per the title thread, the remaining 156s that aren't tossed will be with Northern come May, so they'll have to get used to not having them for the Barton line.

Mind you, if hard-to-clear 185s used to have booked turns on the line, I shouldn't imagine a 170 would have much trouble.

A 158 went up there the other week for a few trips, otherwise it's been 153s and 185s for about the last 20 years.

A 170 went up the branch ECS a few weeks ago, think might have been a training or clearance guaging trip. Don't think there's been any more since, so probably the latter.

I don't think 185s are particularly hard to clear from a gauging perspective, it's just that they're heavy so can't use differentials and can be a bit troublesome for some overbridges. The Barton line isn't particularly fast anyway so even if they do have to run slower than 15x it wouldn't be by much, and presumably there aren't any problem structures. If they'd been the booked stock all day I imagine the fuel costs would have presented a bit of a headache for the bean-counters though.

410 also out on Skegness services. Been a bad few days for regional units.

That means all the Porterbrook units have a home beyond EMR except 156907. Have they definitely given up on that one or is it at Long Marston waiting it's turn at Wolverton but its going last as it'll take the longest to sort out?

Stored pending decision on whether to turn it into paperclips.

Paperclips is probably going to be its destiny from what My mate tells me. Its in a very bad way

Sounds like I'll soon be removing it from my wants list then.

It's going to be odd visiting the East Midlands and not seeing 156s all over the place at places like Nottingham!

Noticed that 156408 ran straight to Newton Heath T.M.D and didn't go to ATC Crewe for repaint. I'm guessing Northern need it for service pretty much immediately?

Actually this unit isn't allowed to run under the Northern guise until 24th May. Currently only delivered for the relevant conversion mods to take place. This unit is also one of the Northumberland Line units that will assist with the release of 158's (when it's ready).

When you say "one of the Northumberland Line units" how many are there?

Yes, apparently only 158s will be allowed to work the Blyth and Tyne route when it opens to passenger services due to timings.
