Does anyone know why the direct DB IC service between Dresden Hbf and Berlin Airport BER has vanished? The journey now requires multiple changes and takes around 3 hr 40 mins. Is this temporary or has the capital of Saxony been permanently cut off from the federal capital?

The next stage of the rebuilding of the Dresdner Bahn has started. Currently at the Northern end it is only possible to join the Berlin Outer Ring line. The junction is being rebuilt to provide a direct route to Südkreuz, and also a shorter route from Südkreuz to the airport.

Due to this only certain trains are running via a diversionary route, and they aren't going anywhere near the airport.

The big majority of pax will not aim for that airport-and direct trains to B, capital, remain as usual. Perhaps surprising: but the big main airport for most of DE=Germany remains FRAnkfurt, followed by M-ünchen. And for short tipical holiday flights etc. DD has its own airport-or rival L-eipzig too. And DD is also not that far from Praha/CZ.
To reach that BER airport 1 change is needed, @ Südkreuz, to S-bahn, but it does indeed lengthen travel time quite a lot.

Most journeys offered by the DB journey planner for this route have at least 2 intermediate connections. Previous experience with DB has shown me that there's a high chance of missing those!

We used to use Dresden airport a lot. Far enough back there were even direct flights to/from London. The pandemic reduced connections from Dresden to FRA and MUC so via Berlin and DB became the common route.

I suspect we'll see a return to using FRA and MUC as hubs for Dresden again. With the rail works completed I guess those direct IC links from Dresden to BER will cease. Transfers around Berlin are tediously slow and uncertain, so possibly we'll abandon that route.

It is an hourly service buy rather than using the main north/south line in Berlin they currently loop round into ostbahnhof.

One hour is a DB IC Stadler Kiss and the other hour is a CD loco hauled with full restaurant car etc.(2 being MAV). I know what I would choose (and have done)

Both Dresden and Leipzig have direct flights to Stansted with Ryanair
