Early this morning quite a few trains were delayed around the Whitehaven and Bootle areas due to “signalling staff being unavailable”. Does anyone have any information on which box(es) were affected and the circumstances?

Drigg signal box is, if I understand correctly, little more then a Xing box. Most of the control was transferred to Sellafield around about 1989 when the railhead for the Low Level Waste Repository at Drigg was installed.

It is still a signal box overseeing a signalled crossover.
It’s a very interesting setup with it being track circuited all the way to Sellafield. One of the signallers told me that it’s from a rather old plan to control the coast line from four power boxes, one would have been at Sellafield.
