Yep, I believe a few more are needed at peak times but the off-peak vehicle requirement is 21.

To coincide with the reopening of the northbound carriageway on North Bridge, a minor service change will take place on Tuesday 25 April.
Service information and timetables
Services 3, 29, 30, 31, 33, 37, N3, N30, N31, N37, X31, X33 & X37
No change to timetables.
Revised routes with journeys towards Clovenstone (3/30), Silverknowes (29/37/N37), East Craigs (31), Wester Hailes (33), Fort Kinnaird (49), Haymarket (N3/N31/X31), Westside Plaza (N30), Semple Street (X33) or Granton (X37) operating via South Bridge, North Bridge and Princes Street.

Revised timetable and route (journeys towards The Jewel will operate via South Bridge, North Bridge and Leith Street).
Service 7
Revised timetable and route (journeys towards Newhaven will operate via South Bridge, North Bridge and Leith Street).

Good news in terms of traffic but saying that Shame that the 8 has reverted to its original route, I thought the diversion route via Great King Street would of been a good connection for Southside

Absolutely not. Good riddance as far as I’m concerned. This has been a major inconvenience for the last two years for many users of the 8 (including myself), the links about to be lost were never that well used and are mostly covered by other buses.

All I’ll say is try doing that route every morning at 5am for a week and by the end of it you’ll agree with me. It’s been horrible.

Not really. You’ll find most of the people that got on/off on the diversion route were passengers that normally would use stops on the normal route, instead with an increased walk.

The locals will probably be happy too. A lot of noise complaints due to the cobbles and rough surfaces, as a driver it wasn't great either. I hope they keep some extra time in the timetables though to allow for congestion and late running, the current running boards can be quite tight.

I think the thing that’s really drove me crazy is they could have had the 8 doing its normal route southbound throughout almost all of this closure. And even the northbound route could’ve still served most of its normal route, but alas they opted for this other route via Great King Street in both directions which to be fair is probably a more reliable option, even if it inconvenienced a lot more people.

Sadly, as soon as one diversion finishes, another one pops up (see Haymarket). However thank you for your kind words! I’ve driven buses in London and Edinburgh and would choose London any day. Edinburgh really is a constant headache for drivers.

Which route is Lothians busiest? A few years ago I would have said the 22 on the section between Waverley and Leith. Now that this service is withdrawn in the area, I would guess that the 37 must be the busiest. I dont think there is ever a quiet journey on that route! Any guesses on how many passengers per journey or by day? I know it covers the equivalent of Edinburgh to York in one day traveling back and forth between Silverknowes and Penicuik. I look forward to hearing your thoughts

It's a bit of a generic answer but I would say 26, even with the lower-capacity buses. On the section between Portobello and Shandwick Place you can't stand unless it's one extreme of the day or the other.

Beyond Eastfield it then ran every ten minutes as far as Levenhall where the route split with buses running either to Seton Sands, Tranent via Prestonpans or Tranent direct via the A199.

I think that the busiest routes are the 3, 11, 16, 25, 26 & 44 but I could be wrong. I notice that the X7 is always busy too but then it’s only a single decker. The 124 can be busy at times as well.

Despite the 22 being every 4 minutes, it still felt like forever for passengers to board at the stop opposite Waverley steps heading towards Ocean Terminal. It would be nice if it was brought back but I don't think it will be now.

The 25 has to be up there, especially on weekdays before 9am and in the late afternoon.

I was thinking that another interesting question would be which is Lothian's quietest, but I imagine that would be the 15 by a fair margin.

Depends how you measure busiest? If you mean how full a vehicle is throughout the route the 30 would no doubt take that as its a busy route end to end and its one of those routes that fills up over and over. You’ll find a typical 30 will fill each seat at least 3 times per journey. In terms of numbers the 3 & 25 would run away with it both being high frequency routes that are consistently busy throughout the day. The 37 is a busy route but its on half the frequency; those others are on so its therefore not as busy a route.
