I feel one sign of getting old is when you realise you've hit the limit of your brain's capacity to absorb new music. There's probably about six songs I've enjoyed and remembered from the last twenty years!

Nothing to do with brain capacity, modern music is generally cr*p……

Ok, maybe it isn’t all cr*p but for a 72 year old who was brought up on the Beatles & Rolling Stones, then graduated to Bon Jovi, Def Leppard etc it appears that way to me :D

The older i get the more modern music i listen to. I think i have been possessed with the spirit of John Peel.

You know you are getting even older when you couldn't care less whether you need Viagra or not!

..to put it another way, in the words of the record The Oldest Swinger In Town by Fred Wedlock issued in 1981:-

"..it takes you all night to do what you used to do all night..." :D :D

Ah, you beat me to it. The words of that song sum up the whole oldie thing really.

On a similar thread, there's Capstick Comes Home, which has the flavour of characters like Harry Enfield/Paul Whitehouses' Old Gits where every whinge has the echo of "we used to have ...". Even without the Yorkshire accent, it can be so self- satisfying in a negative way to be able to refer to things that younger people don't even know existed, let alone understand.

Factoid alert:

I believe the late DJ named himself after the character in the aforementioned folk song.

John Ravenscroft thought that his name might be a bit long for a DJ. Due to some family story about a connection to John Peel, that is the name he chose.

Of course, he could have looked at other folk songs and chose the name "John Barleycorn".

(A song that I sang many times in my folk-singing days)
I once performed the John Barleycorn pagan ritual with pouring some beer into the veg plot in my garden. Didn't really work though.

In my local Tesco and Sainsbury the staff are normally stacking shelves and will only come over if you clearly have no intention of using the self service machines which in Tesco are card only.
Yep. I stand there looking as hopeless as I can. The better half hates me doing that !. Irony is one time in a Sainsburys local she was coerced into using the self service tills (which really are beyond her) and was buying a bottle of wine. The assistant was under the appropriate age to approve the purchase and said there was no one on hand to do it for her. So I asked - "shall I nick it then ?".
When you are thinking you are walking quite fast on a footpath and others, including young children, overtake you.
As a 6ft 2in person with long limbs it is a real shock when some one overtakes me. Young wipersnappers !.

You know you are getting older when the thought of wasting beer in favour of vegetables occurs to you !.

Very unhealthy attitude.

With the advent of music streaming services, having millions of songs of every conceivable genre at your finger tips, your inability to find modern music that you like says infinitely more about yourself that it does about the quality of music nowadays.

Quite. I don't know what genres you're in to but for me, rock and metal is stronger now that it has been in 20+ years. There is plenty of excellent and exciting music being put out my talented young bands in this country and all over the world.

Probably true that us older folks are clinging on to radio rather than go getting what we want online. On the radio the DJs were obviously sometimes hammering a particular song at us. Now we are older we possibly are not keeping up with the latest tastes.

If you remember the days when trying to phone any national or local government department wouldn't involve being put onto an answering machine for 30 minutes while it desperately tried to get you use an app and played cheesey music before you gave up and put the phone down.

..or in the case of HMRC, being cut off before you get the chance to give up and put the phone down. <( <(

It was actually HMRC I was trying to phone ! When I try to phone my council I usually get through to someone with crying kids or memorably a lady who had a fire alarm go off in her kitchen. Another one I phoned during a covid lockdown sounded as though he had been drinking and boasted "Well, you've got through to the expert this time !".

I recall phoning someone once who asked if she could call me back because it was looking like rain and she needed to get her washing off the line.

Shirking Working from home may suit some employers and employees, but unless there is proper supervision it just leads to a decline in the standards of customer service.
