The original station was opened by the North Union Railway in 1838. Does anyone know the reason why the London and North Western Railway chose to move it to a different station site in 1895?

Did they move it to a new site? On the 1894 OS 25” map (surveyed 1892) it appears to be on effectively the same site.

Your OS map was published earlier than the relocation which did not take place until 1895.

But it seems to be in effectively the same place as maps from 1908 and 1928.

The distance of relocation was not very great, from the very old records in my archives. I had a cursory look at Wikipedia which also mentions 1895 as the date of the relocation but the distance is not great in their records. I was wondering if some land stability problems may have been a reason.

Could it be due to the quadrupling and possible engineering considerations connected with the bridge?
