hello. I am a railroad fanatic living in Daegu Metropolitan City, Korea.

While studying machinery, I also watch railroad cars.

I'm writing this because I have a question while watching Flickr.

I wrote a post before, but I didn't get an answer, so I'd like to ask again.

1. ECR French dispatch class 66 locomotive question

* https://www.flickr.com/photos/kitma...CHY7J-2nwZc77-2nvQ6vc-2nEvepJ-2nsZ4Ve-2ni5Tmy

I searched Toton TMD on the Flickr site and saw a picture of a class 66 locomotive.

It has been confirmed that some locomotives are being repaired for use again in the UK.

I would like to know if these locomotives are no longer used in France.

Looking at the picture, I confirmed that the LED headlights were replaced and the exterior was newly painted.

And in the case of locomotives dispatched to France, I would like to know if they are replaced with new signaling equipment.

2. 66230 related questions.

I happened to see a recent picture of the 66230 locomotive on the same site.

I saw a picture taken inside Toton TMD.

* https://www.flickr.com/photos/adamm...ufW5A-2m35e1z-2jfjHe7-2jdwfAM-2jdtfSV-2j5W2bE

I removed the headlights and buffers, but is this locomotive scrapped?

I asked a question before, but I read that it is impossible to return to the main line.

And there is no reply even when I reply to the DB Cargo UK site email, so I am writing again because I want to know the exact contents.

For reference, I do not receive a good response because I am using a Korean account email.

It was written in Korean grammar and translated into English with Google Translate, so please forgive me for any mistakes.

A number of DB 66s are used in France.

A few of them have been returned to the UK.

66 230 is one of those.

It is not scrapped, just stored.

66230 was not one of those returned from France. It was damaged in a collision with a road vehicle at Dollands Moor back in 2018 (the RAIB accident report can be found here: https://assets.publishing.service.g.../file/920948/R052019_190625_Dollands_Moor.pdf). It is currently stored at Toton - in theory it is probably repairable, but with DB having a Class 66 surplus it's not been required to repair it.

66230 isn't one of the ones that was in France. It was involved in an accident at Dollands Moor yard in 2018. One of the cabs has fire damage - for quite a while when it was at Toton that cab was covered with a blue tarpaulin. There's a RAIB report here: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/...utility-vehicle-at-dollands-moor-freight-yard.

So, is this locomotive currently under repair?

I recently saw 66230 photos.

Thought I'd reuse this thread for another DB 66 related question.
Anyone happen to know how many are left in EWS livery? I reckon there is at least one.
If so, would anyone happen to have the numbers for these units?
Thank you.

My bold. There are more than that! I watch Leslie Gilpin’s videos of Carlisle and environs. In the first few minutes of the last one (2 days ago) 66186 is seen pulling an engineering train. There seem to be at least half a dozen usual suspects in EWS livery floating in and out of Carlisle on his videos

Watching some of his other videos now too. Looks like 66186, 66119, 66139 (EWS lettering removed) just from the most recent and one other video from within the past month. A lot more than I expected - I reckoned the vast majority would be in DB red by now from what I've observed with other fleets in the UK.
EDIT: Adding on from a few other videos just to keep a list here people can add to. 66169, 66080 (EWS lettering removed), 66015,

There are over 80 class 66s remaining in EWS livery in this country - So around half of the UK based DB fleet of 164 locos. A number have had their EWS branding removed, and DB logos added in some instances.

I don't believe that any of the 55 Euro Cargo Rail locos in use in France have been repainted out of their original base livery, either, though at least 6 of the 15 locos in Poland have received DB livery.

Thank you! Much more common than I thought. I originally was planning on going out of the way specifically to photograph one when I'm in the UK in June, but it looks like there's a good chance I can see one just by seeing a DB Cargo working with a 66.

No problem, and yes in my experience from my travels EWS liveried 66s are at least as prevalent as DB liveried ones - Though it's a smaller number of the total that still retain EWS lettering and logos.

I have a question.

I have a question about DB Cargo UK locomotive 66230.

I confirmed it suffered fire damage a few years ago at Folkestone, Dollands Moor, England.

I saw recent photos showing the diesel engine disassembled. Will this locomotive be scrapped?

Or, what will it be used for in the future?

I wrote it in Korean and translated it into English using Google Translator. Please understand.

When you asked this question in 2022 it was stated that it is a source of parts and that the loco was unlikely to be restored. I don't think this has changed particularly as DB Cargo have an excess of 66s in their fleet

Things don't really happen very quickly around the DB fleet at Toton.
I suspect it will still be stored this time next year unless a miracle happens !!
Take this information on Train Database with a pinch of salt ! The site shows nearly all of the imported GBRF 66s as "from Sweden" which is NOT correct (only 3 came from Sweden, the rest from Holland and Germany), so the statement that 66230 is "undergoing repair" is highly suspect, especially in view of recent photographs showing it stored and part covered up. It is more likely to be dismantled for spares and I beleive it has already been robbed to some extent.

Absolutely. This report explains what happened at that mishap at Dollands Moor in September 2018 involving 66230. If DB haven't needed it for the last seven years, I doubt it will be repaired

Didn't know a shed had been sidelined for that long, has it worked a passenger train I wonder

I really wouldn't be surprised if more than one DB Cargo France (formerly ECR) class 66 is laid up as a "christmas tree" with parts robbed to keep the others going.

"At Toton, undergoing fire damage repairs." I saw this comment in the Excel file and wanted to know the latest news.

The official status of this loco in TOPS (railway computer system) is "stored unserviceable" with fire damage, with an "expect OK" date of 00/00/00 (meaning there is no planned date for return to traffic).

If there was any repair work happening, it would show "under repair" with an expected date for return to traffic.

This photo shows the damage to 66230, when it was being towed to Toton in 2018: https://www.flickr.com/photos/12297585@N05/45038166361/ (Photo: Michael Barstow)

There doesn't seem to be any structural damage (the vehicle it hit was very small, similar to a golf cart) but the cab looks to have suffered significant fire damage around the area of the drivers desk / controls which may have burnt out the electrical wiring. I think it could probably be fixed if it was really needed, but if lots of wiring needs replacing it would be an expensive job and it would be at the "back of the queue" behind a lot of other stored 66s in better condition. With the loco being 25 years old and many DB Cargo 66s in store, it seems unlikely 66230 will ever be reinstated (but would be useful for spare parts).

This is a picture of Alizay depot (in Normandy, near Rouen) taken in April this year, showing 13 class 66s parked up: https://www.flickr.com/photos/hsthoward/54512318598/ (Photo: Howard Lewsey)

Despite resembling scenes of stored locos at Toton, this may potentially be misleading as the photo was taken on Easter Sunday! Interesting to see that all those 66s are still in EWS livery (albeit with the EWS branding replaced by the now obsolete Euro Cargo Rail name). Apparently there were also 60 Euro-spec locos shipped directly to France (numbered 77xxx or 247xxx) which were delivered in the white Euro Cargo Rail livery.
More about those here: https://www.mainlinediesels.net/index.php?nav=1000511&lang=en

The caption to this picture has an interesting potted history of 77024 (seen at Alizay in 2011): https://www.flickr.com/photos/52932769@N05/54982427922/ (Photo: ChrisDPom)

It's apparently now in service with DB in Germany, as seen here in this 2020 photo:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/158841349@N08/49767701753/ (Photo: Stephan Mockel)

There's a Flickr group which covers Euro Cargo Rail / DB Cargo France and may be a good way of tracking which former UK 66s are actually in regular service:
https://www.flickr.com/groups/2143176@N20/pool/

A picture from that group - 66191, in EWS livery with Euro Cargo Rail branding, works empty wagons originating from Daventry (after delivering water from either the Evian or Volvic bottling plants) on a Calais - Paris Valenton working: https://www.flickr.com/photos/jobiwannn/54610369890/ (Photo: Nicolas B.)
As it's heading for Paris, I assume it will continue towards Riom / Clermont-Ferrand and the nearby Volvic bottling plant (with the Evian one being close to Switzerland / Lake Geneva).

And in the case of locomotives dispatched to France, I would like to know if they are replaced with new signaling equipment.

Post #6 by Smudger105e in this thread has some information on the differences between the 66s in the UK and the 66s from the UK which were modified and sent to France:
https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/class-66-europe-uk-conversions.80757/

The Eurocargo locos have cast iron blocks, KVB signalling equipment, French radios, lifting brackets on every loco, flange lubricators, no air supported drivers seat, different brake timings (incl overcharge) some desk controls are different, headlight switching is different, emergency equipment such as flags, dets and T/C clips are also not UK/French compatable. UK equipment is isolated for use in France, such as AWS/TPWS.

A more recent photo of 66230 shows it heavily stripped at Toton, so a return to traffic is probably now completely off the cards: https://flic.kr/p/2rDVQVC

Given the likes of 66018/043/037/138/145/160/187 are all also long term stored, DB aren't likely going to even need 66230 around as a spare body shell either

But also interesting that there is no visible fire damage on that photo, at least from the side view so it must have had some work done on the damaged end.

The only work done to 66230 is to remove any useful parts, all the fire damage is at the cab end on the right hand side of that photo, all the cab wiring behind the desks was damaged in the fire.

WNXX reports that 66014 is now repainted all over blue, including the front. Suggestion seems to be that it is heading abroad for use there.
