Full and standing today on the Esk valley line, which rather illustrates that the Middlesbrough service needs to be sorted as a priority.

Admittedly as a Friday this would normally be four carriges but it sounds as though one of the units broke down.

Yes, and I think that a 2 hourly service would help spread the demand. At the moment, everyone wants to get the same train there and back as they are the only two trains for a proper day out. It might also help the villages in between as people would be more likely to get off and visit them with a more regular service.

Absolutely.

I think two-hourly is a reasonable aspiration and local politicians/stakeholders need to be pushing for it.

There was some momentum with the proposed potash mine funds, but that seemed to have been wasted.

A quick query; are the Mk1’s used by NYMR on the mainline to Whitby fitted with retention tanks?

https://www.yorkpress.co.uk/news/19192303.284519137/ - Completed during COVID.
The heritage railway is on track to finish a £1 million upgrade project by the end of May.

It is installing controlled emission toilets to its coaches while maintaining their heritage charm.

Instead of being flushed straight onto the tracks, the toilet contents will now be flushed into specially installed tanks until the end of the journey.

Just travelled on the NYMR return from Grosmont to Whitby and the last train back was unbelievably busy with six Mk1 coaches almost full and a queue of around 150-200 long waiting to board. Only a few got off at Grosmont so I suppose a lot of people (and they didn't look like rail enthusiasts) had taken the day out to do the whole line from Pickering. Never seen anything like that number on a preserved railway before so being able to run jointly over this section of National Rail track to somewhere people actually want to go has been a wonderful money-spinner
