I was at Surrey Quays the other day and noticed something strange on platform 1: a 10 car stopping board on a platform and line that only ever sees 5 car trains (East London line of the overground). Is it there for historical reasons, or is there perhaps some strange routing that reverses there? Pretty sure it wasn't an SDO indicator as they are all diamond shaped AFAIK and this was a square.

Any ideas what it is/what it's for?

It may be a 10 "door" stop board, they have them for SDO reasons at Rotherhithe, Canada Water etc

I happened to be at Surrey Quays again today and decided that I had to know. Turns out it's for empty coaching stock.

There is a regular ECS movement from Wembley C Sidings to New Cross Gate depot, which is usually a 10-car.

This is driven by a Willesden driver from Wembley - Olympia, then a NXG driver from Olympia. At Surrey Quays a second NXG driver boards the rear unit and they then drive from Canada Water to the depot. So the stop board is just to make sure the front door of the rear unit is on the platform so the second driver can board.
