EMR class 156s for Northern

Looks like 156403 has now entered revenue earning service with Northern.

It was out yesterday as well, running solo. Today it's coupled to a 150.

However replacing anything with near 40 year old trains. A vast investment is needed in northern asap.
Especially within the north east as we seem to gain extra aging rolling stock from different operators in worse for wear conditions

I feel like the Civities were ordered in too short supply
195s should've been in enough supply to replace most if not all diesels
331s should've had enough to get 323s and 319s gone.
A bi-mode would've had very good potential too.

Blame Treasury and DfT for that not being allowed. And don't expect that to change much in the next few years.

I could be cynical and say that Northern have at least received some new trains - more than can be said for EMR.

The East Midlands franchise has never had any new non-IC stock, just a variety of mid-life, half-knackered hand-me-downs from TOCs, most of who were getting new trains and hence let the trains destined for EMT/EMR become run down (360s, 156/9 from GA, ex-CT 15x, 170/4 in generally tired state). At least the fact that the 156 replacements (ie 170s) are a decent chunk more modern and comfortable softens the blow.

So, IMO, whilst it’s not ideal that the 195/331 order was on hindsight too small, the fact is that Northern passengers should count themselves lucky that they got (some) new trains - others elsewhere on the network haven’t had such luck.

Not my point to call it, personally, increases in driving costs, the Manchester clean air zone would've been nice in providing a good bit of money which could've gone towards trains.
Driving should never be cheaper than the train for small groups, and unfortunately it is.

Any info on 156907 going to Northern? It's meant to go with 413 and 416 at the end of this month, but it's not been sent to Wolverton yet. I know it moved to Barrow Hill recently, but it's apparently back on Etches Park for some reason.

There was a suggestion that it's on decision as to whether it goes to Northern or gets swapped for an ex EMT unit given the appalling structural condition of the ex GA units, I've not seen anything to say a decision has been reached on that though.

It might just be Facebook wibble, but apparently 156409 will be out of Wolverton in May with presumably 907 or 917 taking its place

Apparently 156907 and 156917 will not be in traffic after 31/03/23 as EMR are not extending the concessions to run.
Secondly, 156413 moves to Northern on 26/03/23 running as 5N42 from Etches Park Sdgs to Crewe C.S for repainting.
For anyone losing track, that will leave EMR with 5: 156405/406/408/410/411.

The latest edition of Rail Express magazine has a good piece about EMR 156s and it says 907 and 917 are both due to transfer to Northern.

156907 hasn't been seen out since about the back end of January, I did hear it was meant to be 156907 that was no longer going to Northern and 156917 still was with 156411 hinted as maybe being the replacement for 156907. Not sure if anything has changed though?

907 has had its EMR branding removed and is currently sat on Etches Park. I'm not sure how long it's going to stay there but it won't be back in service for EMR that's for sure.
Last I heard nothing has changed in regards to 411, it's still down to go back to Porterbrook in May. I'm happy to be corrected though.
