Good point but I think the train will still be a traffic-puller (pun intended) because it won't get stuck in traffic around town so it will be quicker and probably cheaper.

Dave
The issue with the train is that there is still the need for passengers to get a further bus from Temple Meads if they are heading to the central area (which is the aim of the P&R), whereas the P&R will be more convenient for the central area, regardless of the still-to-be-confirmed routing of service 9.

Still a market for the bus, the train is little use for people going to anchor road and city centre.

Portway was always the quieter of the P&R and considerably smaller than Briz. Take away even part of the existing bus trade and it seems more marginal. Does that mean shorts between city centre and Briz (where demand is higher)?

If it is to be a regular bus service, without the branding, that would be regrettable and as I say, not certain there's a justification for a cross-city route especially given Bristol's traffic

I'm not certain that there's any great untapped cross-city flow that's being catered for. It's a bit odd TBH
It will provide marginally better access from the east to the Millennium Square area and Harbourside, and from the west to the Temple Meads area. And the Portway service has always provided a local service along the Portway for Shirehampton and Sea Mills.

Clearly different 12s ;)

Not really sure of the relevance of Oxford except that it's another cross-city P&R, like Truro.

Of more significance is that the route is being linked and then simply numbered "9". Unless there's some bespoke livery, that makes it sound like any other city bus service, much as in places like Salisbury. More problematic is the Bristol traffic - we've seen a number of routes disconnected (like the 3/4 being separated from the 42/43) as reliability is appalling, and I'm not certain that there's any great untapped cross-city flow that's being catered for. It's a bit odd TBH

Also, you wonder what will happen with the Portway service once the train station opens?

The relevance is that cross city P&Rs aren't rare, and can be found across many places in the UK, with Oxford being an example. It does look like Bristol is copying Oxford to an extent by having a cross city P&R route.

Btw, what will the 9 use, new ADL E400 MMCs? Will they be dual door like the current First YX66 E400 MMCs in the 33931-33942 series? What's happening to 33931-33942 (the current Bristol P&R dual door E400 MMCs) when the Portway/Brislington P&Rs become the 9?

They are going to Bath Depot for either the park and rides there or for Uni Work.

as I suspected tbh, would make the most sense, considering that the UniBus already has 33943-33950, also dual door (even YX66 too!) just like 33931-33942

I don't think they're copying Oxford, or Truro, or Taunton. It's just that the Portway extends to serve Temple Meads currently, whilst the Briz extends past TM into the city so there's an overlap that, theoretically, can be rationalised and so save on resources.

However, given that the rail station at Portway is likely to take most of the Temple Meads traffic, you could probably save resource by simply cutting the Portway service back to the city centre. Given how bad Bath Road is for congestion (even with some bus priority, there are bad pinch points at the Paintworks and West Town Lane), you're making what are currently two separate routes unreliable.

Stagecoach don't have too many dual-door vehicles in the provinces though they did have some on Cambridge Park and Ride IIRC but they were subsequently replaced by single door versions. Remember that until CT Plus arrived with ex London bendies, the P&R routes were always single doored vehicles (with Portway having single decks in B7Ls).

Basically, First received one batch 33931-50 of which 12 went to Hengrove and 8 to Bath. The move to Bath makes sense to release the e400s from P&R and the long term prognosis is possibly influenced by the fate of the repowered e400Hs. Conscious that this is First speak so perhaps best to move on before the mods intervene :D

Yes that's right, 19295-19314 (I think?) were dual door, and they were AE07-plated ADL Enviro400s. They're now in Lincoln and converted to single door.

Stagecoach Cambridge do still have dual door double deckers, those being the BU69 Volvo B8L ADL E400XLB 13901-13912 used on the Cambridgeshire Guided Busway route B

Anyway, this is my final off topic message.

Are you sure about that? Wessex Bus had two dual door 57 reg Volvo B9TL Wright Eclipse Gemini new to them (now at TfL Sullivan Buses in London, the very unusual occasion when a TfL London bus operator buys second hand from non TfL lol) which I'm pretty sure were used on both the Portway & Brislington P&R routes.

No, you’re quite right and I’d totally forgotten about those 57 plate B9s that they had on the 903 (Long Ashton). Incidentally, Wessex ran the 902 Portway with Plaxton Centros - again why I’m surprised at Stagecoach linking the two routes when one is so much busier and that will be exacerbated by the train service introduction. Don’t recall Wessex operating Briz - thought First had that til CT got it?

I did mean to mention those Busway XLBs and then forgot - I’m blaming age!!! Suspect that Stagecoach may choose single door if new vehicles do appear.

Wessex never ran the Brislington or Portway P&R. The three door Citaros CT Plus used were the first time those routes had not been single door.

I’d always assumed Portway could sustain more of a comprehensive service, working later and on Sundays, where as Brislington has always been commuter based. It was noticeable how once Lyde Green P&R opened and the m3 started that people living closer switched over from Bris.

Add in the fact that since CV19 the numbers using Bris have dropped significantly - I can count on one hand how many times I’ve been on a busy peak bus since 2021, you can see why it went back to be supported from commercial. The car park is now at best a third full, compared to 80-90%, and even then most of the top end is student from St Brendan’s parking.

Talking of which, students form a big part of the peak counter flow traffic. I can see them all moving over to the enhanced 349/522 with their First tickets - should help to speed up morning trips on the P&R!

Wessex did have the Portway for a period (photo courtest of Neil Jennings) between 2007 and 2011

Don't know about now but it was considerably smaller with 500 spaces compared with Briz being nearer 1200. That affects things, and probably explains why it was traditionally single decks under First and Wessex before the bendis arrived.

As I say, I can't see the rationale behind extending it cross city other than to ratonalise the overlap but in truth, they could simply cut the Portway short with the rail service starting.

Christ! o_O I’d completely forgotten about that period!

It’ll be interesting to see the routing, I see Nelson Street is the Portway to Brislington layover stop.

Expect to see a few vehicles from Stagecoach Newcastle as well, probably 11284 / 11293 / 11300 / 11301 judging from bustimes.

Also 11118 and 11119 (Chesterfield) and 10454 (Exeter).

10452 is in Purple Jubilee livery. Looking out for Pride vehicles too! (10894 from Winchester made an appearance last year).

Worthy note as well is that Stockport's 11526 and Guildford's 15986 were here last year too!

Does anybody know who has taken over the 12 as it says Faresaver but they have said that they aren't taking it over? Are Stagecoach Keeping the 12 or is it going to someone else? If anybody knows this will be helpful. Thanks in Advance.
Here's Stagecoach's own link to the new 12 timetable. Interestingly, the Sunday service will be running full route to Parkway...

It is also interesting that even though the 10/11 are only running Avonmouth - Southmead Hospital, the 3 daily journeys that extend to Severn Beach are still running, and from Parkway.

It being extended on a Sunday is about the only good think I can say about these changes.

Yes, indeed. And they clearly aren't interested in short term operation of the 622, 680, 963 or 967, for all of which WECA is looking for new temporary operators.

No direct links from Thornbury to Parkway or UWE - that's a fairly long standing link, with the 10, 77, 83 (or was it 81), and 312.
Interesting that at one point in the past few weeks, First published Sunday timings for the T1 which included it going via UWE so retaining the link from Thornbury to UWE which is currently the 10, but that disappeared quickly. I do wonder if there were some last-minute discussions over these routes as it is strange that the 10 and T1 haven't appeared on Traveline/TravelWest yet, even though the 11 has!

I sware on the first website it said the T1 would call at U.W.E but that seems to be removed

I think just for clarity, people may be getting their 12's mixed up.

Faresaver are taking the 12 service IN BATH over from The Big Lemon.

The 12 Service in Bristol remains with Stagecoach

To be fair the announcement from the council on travel west originally did say Faresaver was taking over the 12 in Bristol, but has been amended since.

And the Sunday Bristol 12 moves from Eurotaxis to Stagecoach with the routing to follow that of weekdays.

== Doublepost prevention - post automatically merged: ==

Also, re the 10/11, the Stagecoach news webpage states that the 10 is to be Avonmouth - Southmead, with the 11 becoming Southmead - Parkway, but the linked timetable has them both Avonmouth - Southmead (plus the 3-a-day every day that run Parkway - Southmead - Avonmouth - Severn Beach). I'll post the link, but I'm sure it will change when someone realises...

Does anyone know what will happen to 36079/36080/36330 the 3 Midi e200s that Stagecoach West have for routes 513/514/663/664/665? All the routes are going from April 2nd.

Few more guests drafted in for Cheltenham Race shuttles

18420 Patchway
11197 Hull

19706 Bedford
15277 Canterbury
15328 Eastbourne
10989 Swindon

As is standard during Race week, the 94 seems to have a mixture of remaining Gold E400MMCs and Scania E300s.

I don’t think it’s unfair to say Stagecoach couldn’t give a toss about local customers during race week when they can grab a fiver off thousands of tourists for a single 2 mile journey between the station and racecourse. Wonder how that will work tomorrow with no (or very limited) trains.

I was in Cheltenham for one of the race days last year and the cancellations on local services were terrible, hope they’ve done a better job this year.

The traffic commissioner will have something to say on the subject if local services are cancelled to prioritise Cheltenham Festival. It won't be the first time the Western traffic commissioner has taken action against Stagecoach for prioritising major events over local service provision.
