London North Eastern Railway (LNER) First Class service

Quite an impressive service on the 1957 off York towards Newcastle tonight.
Crew came through with food orders before we'd even left, and I had a glass of wine in my hand by Skelton Junction, sausage roll shortly followed accompanied by crisps and the chocolate pot.
Another drinks run around Eaglescliffe, then the TM followed with snacks.
We've just passed Sunderland and he's done another run, and when I said I was only going to Newcastle he popped two cans of Budvar on the table.
Apparently no service in my set after Newcastle so everyone's been encouraged to fill their boots or shift to the front set.
It was £15.20 standard or £15.20 First, so naturally I'm happy! Once again, another good product for a weekend.

Feb to May menus are available on the LNER website. Looks fairly similar to the previous one to me.I asked them. It changes "in a couple of weeks"
Yes, does look exactly the same. Dish still doesn't include a meat main unless you're happy with just a roll. Really doesn't cut it for an evening meal from KX.

Do they still do the standard trolley?
Thats what I was wondering. First trip was Inverness to Edinburgh secondly Edinburgh to York.
I don't think there's been any options I'd class as a satisfying meal for some years (though there's been some tasty options). I'd note I rarely travel at suitable times for breakfast.

I seem to recall the trolley being discontinued when the Azumas started, but don't know about the class 91 sets.

I'm sorry but that is still awful
The sausage roll needs a salad with it certainly on the dish and dine options and and none of the sandwiches appeal to me personally, if the sole motivation for going first class was that the food might be edible then I'd be back in standard. As it is my motivations for going first class on the East coast these days are actually getting a comfortable seat that doesn't require a visit to a physiotherapist and an osteopath after 5 hours on board. But still I think my point stands, perhaps they are trying to make the catering is on appealing as possible

On the positive side however, I like the fact that Pepsi has replaced Coke and famous grouse has given way to high commissioner. It's interesting because high commissioner used to be a brand synonymous with corner shops and in many places still is but I've noticed it appearing a bit more on gantries in pubs that want to offer something a bit better than bells in terms of quality but still at a good price and now LNER are offering miniatures.
That's a shame. Budvar was definitely one of the things they were getting right, and Skinny Lager sounds absolutely terrible

Skinny lager sounds awful like fairly generic lager tasting substance that pertains to contain alcohol that you might normally find in a supermarket own label can but repackaged and sold to LNER as a budget conscious alternative. I wonder if they're still offering a selection of proper branded lager in the food bar? Anyone fancy trying this commodity in the coming weeks as I have no booked journeys and no intention of booking any

I don't think they do the trolley at all anymore. But the at seat service is advertised on seat backs and on the wall next to tables so I guess a PA would be nice but it isn't exactly hidden away. I used it the other week to get a tea delivered to my seat in standard class!

I've used the at seat service a few times in standard. I do find its unavailable quite regularly though (for whatever reason).

It is surprising how much experiences can differ, making sharing experiences (both positive and negative) on the forum very useful.

I prefer the softer cushion rather than the harder style headrest. I got looked after well on my 9 and a bit hour journey from Inverness to Kings Cross, Waffle soon on departure from Inverness with a Sausage roll delivered around Reston after Edinburgh. Worth the extra £45 for weekend first, as standard class was quite busy.
Although I agree with BT, a bit of salad with the sausage roll wouldn't have gone amiss, even if a few lettuce leaves.
One of the catering crews (think there were 4 sets in total) wasn't the most proactive with drink/snack runs. They did one run then nothing for the next hour.

I'm thinking about going to York from Newcastle in a couple of months time (on a Sunday) and the 2nd class fare (with railcard) is £13.30 but 1st class is only £14.25, so I'll obviously pick that.
Is there coffee and tea provided ?
Anything else ?
I remember years and years ago travelling to London with my parents and we had full English breakfasts on the train ... even as a kid, I thought that was dead cool

LNER offers quite an array of drinks as part of it's first class offering, including tea, coffee, soft drinks, fruit juices and alcoholic drinks. They also offer a variety of complimentary food, which is mostly cold nibbles like sandwiches and sweet treats, but does also include some hot meals depending on the time of day you travel. For instance, as I will be travelling first class between Edinburgh and Peterborough in the late afternoon next week, they've informed me that I will be offered food from their 'Dish Menu', which can be found here (and also includes a specific list of the drinks available):
