This is an unusual diagram, empty stock from Burton Wetmore to Tyne on Saturday, then Necastle to Wembley central via Old Road, Leicester, Nuneaton and Wembley Central and reverse at 2105 from Wembley after the game, arrive back at NCL 0225.
I don't know why this one is allowed to terminate/start there when others aren't, I did it once in 1961. :) These details are on Realtimetrains web site.

Does 38Cto15E suggest the 1961 FA Cup Final?

Do you have any further details to share (though I guess that ought to be in history and nostalgia)?

The information I have is that most of the specials from Leicester for the 1961 FA Cup Final ran up the Great Central to Wembley Hill, not to Wembley Central.

No, the op is talking about the Newcastle-Wembley Central train scheduled for this Sunday, 26Feb2023. I don't know anything about it except it is accessible via Real-time trains, Railcam etc.

I was referring to the OP's comment about 1961. 38C and 15E are the ER and LMR shed codes for Leicester Central.

Just out of interest on this, does anyone know if the train will be able to be boarded at Nuneaton during the reversal? I live here & I'm going to the cup final (& i'm an NUFC fan) so would work out just wonderful.

It's a private charter, not a service train, so no.

When Liverpool went to Wembley last year, there was a charter to Wembley Central with club staff officials and ex players I believe

will surely be a pair of 67's.

Newcastle haven't won a cup in colour so their last winning footex must have been steam hauled!

Wasn't that the one which infamously had to depart before the penalties to avoid an engineering works block?

It terminates then runs empty into the Yard to stable, nothing unusual in that - the Same thing was done by DB when a certain other stripy football team from the NE got to Wembley in 2018 or 2019 (against Portsmouth, IIRC).

I didn't want to dwell on 1961 or else the mods would be after me, but, there have been posts before, I think I may have contributed, about why football specials do not use Wembley Central these days.

Magdalia, For the 1961 FA Cup Final I went from Leicester Central to Wembley Hill probably with a V2. However, the week before it was the Schoolboys International and I went from Leicester London Road to Wembley Central via Market Harborough and Northampton with probably a Black 5.
While I'm at it, I did work a Leeds United Footex in I think 1972 to Northampton from Leicester, this train was going to Wembley Central for the game against Sunderland.

I think with all the money in football at the highest level that the Premier League and clubs could fund platform extensions, stairs, lifts etc etc at Wembley Central to accommodate more Footex's, especially from Manchester and Lime Street. Aston Villa and Wolves are also in the PL but with the Nuneaton track layout now suitable for T&T 67's more areas of the country would come into play as per this Sunday.

What are footexes anyway? they make me think of a shoe company but no shoe company would be able or willing to fund that many charters. Are they something to do with football?

They spend all their money on players and agent's fees, not funding infrastructure. Also, the return on individual infrastructure enhancements would be very poor given how rarely each club would actually use it. How often have Wolves and Villa Played at Wembley since it was rebuilt?
It's hard to get good paths for Footexes and even harder to get sensible departure slots after later games. Chelsea used to run trains through Thomas Cook for their away games but they ended up getting home at stupid o'clock in the morning of having to leave before the final whistle because of pathing issues and I think eventually they dropped it in favour of coaches.

Football Excursion trains, additional trains laid on either primarily or solely for football fans travelling to away games. See also CrankEx (for spotters) and MysteryEx (either with cheap fare but unadvertised destination or just somewhere nobody would want to go).

Always a risk that the final can run into extra time & penalties adding nearly an hour (depends how long the penalties take). Same with regular trains with the gamble of booking advances.

At least the coaches can sit in the coach park at Wembley (assuming it still exists) and depart when the game ends.

Yep, Avanti used to request Q paths for pens and it was a blooming nightmare.

It isn't their job to invest in railway infrastructure anymore than it is the job of Tesco to pay to resurface the m1!

Why not just run the train into your London terminus and let the underground deal with it form there? Much easier!

agree it’s not the clubs job, however it is the FAs job to enable people to get to/from Wembley in safety and reasonably good order. Hence they paid for work at Stadium and Park. Not much point doing anything significant at Central though, not least because it’s quite difficult.

It is, absolutly, for the fa to fund any improvements.

I would start with dynamite.........

I am going to take a piccie of the train as it comes through Leicestershire on it's way to Wembley Central, this is probably the nearest Leicester folk will get to Wembley this year. :)

Wouldn't it be great to see the times/numbers /classes of all the specials the last time The Toon won the FA Cup? A1's,2's 3's 4's V2's B1's :)
