Last return working to M'boro cancelled 'cos of "disorder".

Unit left 62 late as ECS.

Anyone know what was going off at that time late on a February night?

(Trust it wasn't @yorksrob having an argument over passenger loadings :))

The conductor was assaulted. Don't know any more detail than that.

Turns out that the most common crime in Whitby is gangs assaulting innocent victims.
Let's hope that the conductor is well and that the suspects get a decent sentence.

You'll find that these "gangs" are NOT from Whitby but tend to be from up the line in the larger town.
Having very good friends that LIVE in Whitby the trouble comes down the line and down the A171.
As many have said in the past to reduce crime rate in Whitby close the A171.

Dunno where you get your info from!

Hope the staff involved are ok.

Have you a link for that?

Similar issue in Horsham, the local scum coming down from Crawley and causing trouble.

Hertford East used to have a problem with troublemakers arriving by train. Not sure if that is still the case.

Google 'Whitby assault' and it seems to be a pretty common occurrence in the town. Not something I would have expected.

Amazing how often, when a place gets a reputation for anti-social behaviour, it's apparently always "comers-in" that are responsible rather than locals...

Whitby is somewhere I've visited many times and have never had any issues, I suppose it's the same as anywhere else, it could be the nicest place for miles around but if you're in the wrong place at the wrong time...

Having visited Whitby every years for over 50 years, have dozens of friends that live there and spent many days walking around Whitby I've never come across trouble from locals.

90% of trouble comes from city dwellers that are not local.

THe last trains FROM whitby tend to be dry trains due to returning passenger anti social behaviour.

I've been to Whitby on many occasions and the only trouble I've had is the last train turning up late and missing my connection.

I don't doubt trouble happens, but the same is true of everywhere with concentrations of people.

Unfortunately the crew would normally be a driver and a conductor. Nobody to turn to for help, booking office closed at this time of day. Unusual for there to be a problem on a Monday night though. Fridays and Saturdays sometimes warrant presence of security staff.

I was at Kidderminster yesterday at 5pm returning home after my relatives funeral, the 17:01 to Dorridge was announced as delayed due to disruptive passengers. Recent Train Times website has it down as being cancelled at Snow Hill due to trespass.

Quite surprising really, but then again it’s a seaside town and many seaside towns seem to attract disproportionate levels of problems for some reason.

If you're referring to Middlesbrough, I've never heard that nickname before. Usually lumped in with Geordies from southerners or smoggies from nearer.

That was my first thought tbh. Would have expected it on a Saturday night when it can quite 'interesting' at times! I hope the guard is ok.

Nowt to do in the winter and lack of employment are the big issues, in the summer you can at least sit out on the Beach until late to while the time.

As per most UK seaside resorts.

I’m not sure either. I identify as a geordie but technically I’m a sand dancer. Monkey hangers from Hartlepool im familiar with and the gentlefolk from Sunderland have a clear identity, but I’m not quite sure about Middlesbrough

Quite, living near Weymouth and going there usually multiple times a week you see the vast difference between summer and winter.

Yes, agreed, I have family living in Clacton On Sea, although the town has more than enough of it's own problems, you definitely see the difference come summer.

I refuse to visit during the height of summer.

Not heard of that term before, either, although I believe that residents of 'South Bank' (the locality which is situated some three miles outside of Middlesbrough) are sometimes referred to as "Slaggy Islanders".

they are smog monsters/smoggies.

Newcastle? Sunderland? York? Bet it is York. Wrong uns there. ;)

The inference is clear - it is people form the boro causing issues. I think that is quite an easy "out" which shunts problems onto someone else. The problem isn't tied to one location and is sadly common across the UK. I would have said booze inspired but these days other substances seem popular!

I was reading the thread and about to ask this very question. It seems no-one has the answer.
