I applied for a role with South Eastern and they wouldn't progress my application because I didn't live south of the Thames. I was told in a phone call from HR that managers won't interview anyone who lives on the north side of the river.

Not sure what role it was. But you must be within 40 minutes of the work location

Trainee train driver I think at all depots. Dartford was on the list and I live 15 minutes away (as long as the crossing is clear). This was why I asked the question why I was rejected.

I know of a few people who have lived in (eg) Stratford and Kilburn and commuted into central London SE depots, so it isn’t true that they’re only looking south of the river. There won’t be many affordable areas north of the Thames within range of their depots, though.

The Dartford Bridge/M25 is closed/disrupted pretty regularly, and is basically your only practical route to work if you’re somewhere like Thurrock. That would likely be a less reliable commute than for someone on the south bank with a range of possible routes to work including public transport as well as driving, even if they were further away from the depot as the crow flies.
