47542 What were those extra bodyside grills?

47542 had extra grills added where it’s bodyside door was. I’ve not come across another photo of a similar modification on another 47. Was it because it was duel heat or am I missing something obvious.?

542 was called cross country grills by 47 bashers

The online 'Stratford TRSMD diary' for 1985 has the following entries

April - 47542 received an experimental modification to its cooling system when the bodyside windows in the auxiliary compartment at No1 end were replaced by grilles

August - Boiler isolated 47542

October - 47542 was further modified with grilles replacing its No 2 end bodyside windows

Was an experiment to provide additional ventilation in the engine room. '456 had the glass bodyside windows at one end replaced with grills in Jan 1985 and '542 had the same mods in the April. They went further with 542 and changed the glass windows at the other end then also did the bodyside door grills (1986-88). Reference 'Class 47:50 year history' (Lilley/Hiscock & Ward).
