Ipswich will be a good place to capture the long distance 745s plus 720s on the stoppers (as well as plenty of freight). Also 755s from Lowestoft, Cambridge, Peterborough & Felixstowe.

Cambridge is also a good place (Thameslink, Great Northern, GA 720s, plus the 755s on Norwich - Stansted services & from Ipswich. (Plus the XC 170s).

Norwich will also be good to grab units on the depot and sitting around the station waiting for evening peak.

I would try a 3 car 755 on electric power where there is a high speed limit, for the acceleration. A good place for that would be southbound from Stowmarket from Cambridge or Peterborough.

Thanks Kite. Im definitely planning on Cambridge and Ipswich. Is it worth going on any of the branches?
Also is there any visibility of crown point from public view - its been many years since ive been out that way. Thanks!

For number collecting, Cambridge, Ipswich and Norwich are the three main hubs. All the branches are interesting in different ways, but you won’t see anything extra that you wouldn’t see at those three places, apart from the rather unusual collection of old rolling stock now gathered at Great Yarmouth.

Crown Point is your main problem. While the better view is from the Ipswich / Ely direction, a few units are stabled around the side of the shed which would be difficult to get the numbers of, and the view of some could be blocked by other units. Plus those inside the shed of course. Be aware there are four new sidings at Trowse on the down side of the Ipswich - Norwich line that may have 745s stabled.

The diagrams can be followed using the platform numbers in real time trains (but beware of on the day swaps). Most class 755 workings are simply out and back but Lowestoft is one place where sometimes the Norwich and Ipswich services swap over to keep the units within fuel range.

Worth stopping at Ely, plenty of freight and passenger traffic, also several food outlets on station, You can see the 755s swap over from diesel to electric, and also pick up the ex c2c 387/3 units (diagrams and allocations on Part Time Spotter Blog.)

From Ely, its about a 5 mile walk to walk along the river towards the sidings at Potters and then back past the Cathedral.
Ordnance Survey map showing route North from Ely station along the river, past Potters to Queen Adelaide, returning past Ely Cathedral to the station
Another nice walk is to get off at Berney Arms and then walk to Great Yarmouth, which takes you past Great Yarmouth carriage sidings

This is a Geoff Marshall about the walk from Berney Arms

Thanks for that 306024. Very useful. Is any of crown point visible from roads and/or footpaths please?

Nothing more than you see from the train really. The only advantage is you’ll probably be moving slower.

Both those walks are excellent, and Norwich, Ely and Cambridge are all fine cities. Ipswich less so, but has some nice parts.

Thanks again to 306024. I was wondering if anyone is aware whether someone is keeping a running list of stock located at Potters? TIA
