Plenty back in stock today in Sainsburys. Enough so to get my meal deal egg portion for the one day I get food while in the office!

Every couple of weeks I used to be promised extra Nectar points upon my purchase of 12 large free range eggs. However, this last happened about 6 weeks ago. Maybe Sainsbury's are reducing people's incentive to buy them for fear of a shortage?

Maybe you don't accept that there is a shortage, and you are seeing one consequence?

It has been explained (repeatedly) up-thread that UK producers are being paid less than the cost of production so they are winding down, with the unfulfilled demand being taken up by lower-welfare, lower hygiene standard imports. At a higher price too... there's clever government for you (not!)

I picked up a half dozen eggs in Aldi today. Some lines were sold out but there was still a fair amount. There was a very small notice saying that customers were restricted to three boxes, which seems a bit strange when some of them had fifteen eggs in them.

Maybe it’s actually the boxes that are in short supply?

Talking of boxes: I guess they protect the fragile eggs a bit.

But are eggs transported in cushioned containers or on cushioned pallets? Or are they not as fragile as I thought?

Brings to mind one of the design goals for the Citroën 2CV, which was to carry a basket of eggs across a field with none of them breaking!

Local shops, supermarkets and farm shops all seem to have plenty around here, the farm shops even sell them by the corrugated tray (24 or 30?)

If there are problems in some areas, must be more to do with local transport logistic problems than a physical shortage.

A lot of supermarkets seem to source their "regular" eggs from local suppliers, and bird-flu has obviously affected some areas more than others. It's worth noting though that bird-flu isn't the only issue, certainly according to some farmers.

My local supermarkets have all got eggs back in stock.

Whilst the number of boxes on the shelves is slightly lower than normal, there is a selection of eggs in all sizes.

Panic over - for the time being at least.

I was in Tesco yesterday (proper one,not one of the local things) and there were no eggs whatsoever.The space where they were normally sold was instead filled with mince pies.

Our local Sainsbury’s had no eggs whatsoever yesterday, so seemingly the shortage is ongoing!

Only 2 boxes of 6 medium eggs in a local Asda yesterday. There some boxes of 15, but that's just just too many for our useage.

I have to say that we've been struggling badly for our supplies of eggs. Rarely do we have a day where we have most of our normal ranges of eggs on sale, very often only having one or two shippers of eggs total (which disappear within a morning, mostly by the pickers taking them for home shopping orders). It's now to the point that we reduced our limit on boxes of eggs from 3 per customer down to 2. If this keeps up, it wouldn't surprise me if we have to reduce the limit down to 1 box per customer.

We've had no shortage of eggs around here, at anytime up to now.
Only yesterday, we visited Tesco and then our fairly large M&S food hall.
Both had plentiful stocks of eggs, as usual.
We didn't buy any though, as our last stop was our local, family owned greengrocers, where we buy our local free range eggs and almost all our fruit and veg.
They were fully stocked with eggs too.

Went to Tesco twice this week. Monday not even the grey crates (usually about 8 I would guess) that the egg boxes are kept in, a few speciality eggs on the shelves above. Second visit on Friday, three of the grey crates but no eggs in them, again some more expensive boxes above. Friday was around 0900 so anyone doing their 'big shop' for the weekend would come away disappointed. An eggcellent way (groan) to drive people into Aldi across the road.

It does seem strange that not all supermarkets are affected equally. Sainsburys in Doncaster is rather poor at the moment over the last three weeks for choice - but I’ve no doubt someone will post in a minute that their Sainsburys is fine!

I have had the situation where Aldi have plenty of eggs, and Iceland on the other side of the street are completely sold out.

So it must depend on your supplier, and which supermarket pays the highest price for eggs, as the supplier will prioritise the supplier who pays the best price if there is a shortage.

This week I've picked them out of choice as I think they make better boiled eggs than the standard ones so are worth the extra.

Quoting both your posts, last week Sainsbury's had very few one afternoon but Tesco had plenty the following morning.
