The departures board at Basingstoke seems to show a fairly high rate of success with the revised schedules. One puzzler is the arrangements for Hook buses. An all stations bus to Woking leaves at the same time as one to Hook only.Screenshot_20230123-103724.png

The revised timetable seems to be mostly a success according to RTT, most services are running through albeit with a few minutes delay.

I might take a trip from Basingstoke to Woking and back and video the slue section.

Just come over it on the Down now on the 2205 home. Very good job for me in the slew and the smoothness and speed either end. For some reason I was expecting a lot slower.
Well done all who worked through that

…..and then you get to Basingstoke and the main entrances are locked up with coaches outside waiting with no staff to assist by the looks of things ?

I was on 1L16 0514 Yeovil Jn - Waterloo this morning. It was a 6 car, Full and Standing from Basingstoke, made additional stops at Fleet and Farnborough. I think at Farnborough large numbers couldn't get on, this was a 0709 departure with the next one at 0755! I know it's a difficult situation, would have been better if it was a 9 car but that wouldn't have coped with the numbers at Farnborough.

Pre Covid Farnborough in the peaks could have potentially justified it's own trains with hundreds getting on each train at as 4tph frequency, even Fleet was fairly busy.

The other two stations were no slouches either, with the train being empty enough that you had a choice of seats (do I sit in this block of 4 or that of 6 or this pair or that pair) at Basingstoke but being full enough approaching Fleet that there were few seats available.

This was the case for 12 coach trains, so hardly little trains.

Whilst the trains were broadly as busy arriving to Farnborough as leaving, that was because about the same number got on as got off.

At Farnborough this morning 2T14 0645 to Waterloo was cancelled so I think I am right saying that between 0612 and 0755 the only London train was 1L16 at 0709 which as I have said was 6 car.

It would have been better to call one of the 10 coach services from the Southampton direction rather than the 6 coach diesel.

Suggested this above wondering why the diesels wheren't going to Reading for services to Paddington. Class 444s / 450s in 10/12 carriage formation would be a better use orf capacity than a six carriage Class 159.

Or even trying to make sure all the trains towards London from Salisbury are 9 coaches.

I presume the 0514 Yeovil Jn - Waterloo service would normally be 9 coaches (after Salisbury) in a normal timetable, just this morning was short-formed to 6 coaches.

No the 0514 Yeovil is booked a 6 car so not a short form. The following 1L18 which terminated BSK was an 8 car. Hopefully after a few days sense will prevail and the longer formations will be on the Waterloo trains. I know it's been short notice but this morning showed that the Fleet and Farnborough provision wasn't possible with the service provided. I think maybe they could run more trains but I'll probably be told otherwise

In the same way that it was impossible to run ANY buses last week, yet they're running this week.

It’s not always a case of just pinching units off one diagram and attaching them to another formation, however the 158 on 1L18 could quite easily go onto 1L16 / 1L17 as it them forms 5Y20 route refresh, so would just need to be “lost” at Salisbury for 30 minutes if possible.

In regards to buses not being provided, it was more than likely an intentional decision as a bus carries a maximum of 70 people, less than 1 coach of a full and standing Desiro. If everyone turns up as normal expecting a to be merrily conveyed on a bus, it would be carnage.

If there was it would have been for one day, as those who could would have made other arrangements very quickly.

It's not hard to advertise that there'll be infrquent limited buses (even if they're hourly) and most will look at what other options they have, but for those with no option then it's something.

However an hourly bus would have likely be adequately at most times during the day, other than at peak hours if about 1/3 people were traveling. At peak hours many would likely be able to get to another station. Whilst you'd probably need about 1/10 of the pre Covid passengers traveling to show an hourly bus service to work, that's not beyond the realms of possibility. Especially given the advice was not to travel.

I believe there is a plan to strengthen that 0514 Yeovil to Waterloo to 9 carriages after Salisbury, from tomorrow.

On Tueaday afternoon, there was disruption on the Portsmouth Direct and to my surprise, they diverted trains via Eastleigh. I would have thought there wasn't the capacity to do that. Clearly, there was.

Perhaps the regulations or best practice they follow doesn't allow for buses when the advise is do not travel.

Perhaps the capacity wasn't for the stopping trains but an extra fast could be squeezed in?

Thankfully today they've reinstated the 708 from Basingstoke providing much needed extra capacity from Hook to Farnborough stations

There's a fairly large site compound set up now in the field by the slip, so presumably they've got their temporary road access in place

Interestingly, the OS map indicates that there's been a previous slip there, but on the northern side Screenshot_20230127-125052.png

I'm going to Fareham on the 4 Feb and plan to travel passed the site. A rare chance to travel down on what is usually an up line. I do realise it's very short but still, something different.

Its only two track for a short section so should have been able to accommodate the full service really. GE run 9TPH up what is effectively a two track railway to Shenfield now as well as accommodating an intermodal every hour as well.

Looking at the Lidar from Lidarfinder.com it looks like that is a berm rather than a failure, however its probably more likely the failure happened first

I've grabbed an image from the BBC South drone footage to show the slip remediation works in detail (for us engineering geeks)Screenshot_20230127-162719.png

Looking at that map, the bulge to the north is the 1960 landslip, which started with the right-hand watercourse (of the two passing under the embankment). The 1951 landslip was to the south at the same place, and is visible in the lidar profile. The new slip is to the west of the left-hand watercourse (the Whitewater), but in between there is another slip visible in the lidar and in the video as a ledge partway down the slope. The lidar also shows several other bulges, bearing out the reports of several more earlier landslips.
