Irish Rail and BOJ?

I will be making a dublin to Waterford journey and would like a "Break of Journey" in one direction at carlow. Is this allowed on Irish Rail or is it a return to Carlow and another Carlow to Waterford?

BoJ is not permitted by Irish Rail on one ticket, outside of the DART.

You'd need separate tickets for each leg I'm afraid.

It also doesn't allow splitting tickets (this when I went was actually printed on the back!) so what you'll need is three singles. Legal precedent prevents UK TOCs banning this, however it doesn't in Ireland.

Yes, unfortunately also a difference with Irish Rail vs the UK.

That's not correct. It's exactly the opposite: break of journey is allowed except on the DART. See sections 8 and 37 of the Iarnród Éireann conditions of carriage. You are meant to complete your journey on the same calendar day, though this is obviously unenforceable.

If Bullfield WEst wishes to make the Carlow to Waterford journey on a subsequent day however, they will need a new ticket for that, because the outbound part of the Heuston to Waterford ticket will have expired.

My sincerest apologies @Bullfield WEst I could've sworn thete was a 'NOT' in there both times I read Section 37.

On reading it a third time, there is no 'NOT' and I completely agree with @island

One other thing – all Iarnród Éireann tickets sold online are train-specific; "open" tickets are only sold at the station. Heuston to Waterford on an "open" return is €35.15; it may be cheaper to purchase three online single tickets.

It looks like break of journey is permitted, provided the journey is atill completed the same day. The Conditions of Carriage state:
'
8,1 Except as may be specified in the publications and notices of and applicable to Iarnród Éireann, the holder of an single ticket may break his or her journey at intermediate stations on any route for which the ticket is valid within the period of validity of the ticket.
8.2 Except as may be specified in the publications and notices of and applicable to Iarnród Éireann, the holder of an return ticket may break his or her journey at intermediate stations on any route for which the ticket is valid, provided the journey is completed within the same calendar day, except where the timetable does not permit, in which latter case the journey must be completed on the next available service.
