No nothing out.

This whole saga is a disaster for public confidence in a reliable train service on the Marches line. There is only one appropriate destination for these clapped out locos and carriages, namely Newport, specifically Sims scrapyard. It is regrettable that TfW did not buy some more class 197 dmus instead.

They would have enough 197s, its the Welsh Government that wanted Mk4s so more 197s can be strengthening other routes.

Imagine we took this attitude with every brand new or cascaded stock that had teething problems when it entered into service - there would hardly be any trains left nationwide!

And it's not as though the 197s have had a perfectly smooth introduction into service either.

They would have enough 197s, its the Welsh Government that wanted Mk4s so more 197s can be strengthening other routes.

The extra MKIVs (and the retention of some 153s) allowed all of the 170s to be cascaded to EMR. Originally they were meant to be staying with TfW.

Hopefully in a few weeks, once I commit to a trip to Manchester with that 0849 from Cardiff, I'll have some good fortune and get a MK4 set. I have to say I'm glad I didn't have any First Class tickets booked or whatever recently, but here's to things smoothing out ASAP

Due to where the sets ended on Friday, Monday should see 3 sets out but will again see 0454 Crewe to Cardiff, 0849 Cardiff to Manchester, 1230 Manchester to Cardiff, 1650 Cariff to Manchester, 2030 Manchester to Crewe operated by a mk4 set instead of the normal diagram on the Manchesters. There's no set in Holyhead over the weekend so 05:33 Holyhead yo Cardiff, 10:52 Cardiff to Manchester etc will be unit formed.

The usual 3 diagrams should then resume on Tuesday.

So which diagrams *are* running on Monday? Just asking as I'm travelling to S. Wales and want to know if the 1430 Manchester to Cardiff is still running as booked.

The 0849 isn't on a permanent Mk4 diagram just yet, it just runs ad-hoc if it balances out sets. When the next diagram is introduced fully, that's on there but looks like that's a little way off yet. The only morning departure to Manchester from Cardiff which is generally booked Mk4 (except tomorrow) is the 1052 Cardiff-Manchester /1125 Cardiff-Holyhead.

Just the workings in the post you quoted. The 1430 is expected to be a unit as there's no set in Holyhead which is where that one starts it's day. It was planned to leave one there on Friday night to form it but for whatever reason didn't happen. The 1230 will be a Mk4 but thats about it tomorrow in the afternoon.

I am on TfW this morning, thanks to RTT showing a pair of 158s coming up in a bit. Short notice trip for 3 hours to Shropshire it is then, I was supposed to be spending that £14-odd more wisely, but a pair of 158s to take me into position for some Sustrans map gap filling was impossible to resist! I'd have gone for longer, but I didn't fancy the 175 an hour later so I'm booked on the 158 pair both ways

Just as an update, I got my 158s this morning but the service back turned up with 150257+150283! Ugh, and what a state they were in! Enough to put one off TfW any time soon, I've even postponed my trip to Cardiff for the 231s. I nearly booked First Class Advances in that TfW sale, so I could escape the insanity, for the week after but the faith is missing and I don't want to suffer a rancid condition 150 again any time soon!

It speaks volumes when I would rather go to Birmingham on WMR than travel on TfW at the moment!

TfW and ATW before are normally pretty good at swapping sets from Canton when needed. If a 175 is available I'm sure that'll be sent out if not maybe a 150 to attach and then at least they'll be a bit more space on the train!

I think 2 x 197s will be pushing it from May. Nobody in South Wales have yet to be trained on them, numbers in Crewe and Shrewsbury also low I’d say faint possibility of July/August onwards or maybe later in the year.

I cant see the 197s being on the Manchester to South Wales services as soon as May. Last I heard tney hadnt even started training Cardiff and Carmarthen depots yet.

Ah not great, but still better than some other days. Things seem to be improving (though it's probably too soon to make any judgements).

To ensure a set finished in Holyhead, 67013 and HD05 went onto the Crewe-Chester shuttle for a couple of hours before picking up w96 in Chester so HD04 should be ready for w91 in the morning and hd05 Will now be in Holyhead for v91.
