I guess it comes down to personal preference of who you’d prefer to work for, or if you think you’ll pass their MMI and they will recruit quicker. I think you can still go as far as I’m aware, but ultimately it’s your decision
thanks mate , really appreciate it

Your mmi will overwrite the cbi so even if you pass the mmi you're pass on the cbi will be null and void so think carefully.

It really is a shame as they are labelled as two different assessments. As a result, if you have done the CBI, you pretty much can’t continue with any other applications unless you decide to bin the other one.

Hello, how long did it take from your DMI interview to find out if you were successful? I only had mone yesterday morning but keep going over it in my head. It seemed positive but you never know do you. Congratulations by the way!
Good news on you having your DMI. I found out by email 8 days later. They told me they would tell me within 14 days or that was the plan.

Sure you smashed it! Which station have you applied for?

I recently received feedback for my CBI. More puzzled than before if I’m honest. I passed 4/5 of the set questions but failed on one which they said was the rules and procedures one. Can’t wrap my head around it as I used dispatching trains as a conductor for that one so confused.com it is for the next 6 months! Haha

Did they give you anymore insight other than rules and procedures?

Would you describe the rules and procedures for dispatching trains the same types of rules and procedures for operating trains? Such as speed limits, braking distances etc?

I feel it's a very broad topic and tbh I'm not looking forward to my CBI as I'm not very good at interviews having not done one for six years.

Yes, following the exact set of R&P set by the RSSB & TOC is very relatable to following rules and procedures a driver must follow. Safety culture of a guard and driver sing from the same hymn sheet.

I must say, honest truth I never cross referenced any of my examples to what a driver does. I don’t think it’s expected of you, I was leaving that for the DMI.

You’ll be fine, I hadn’t had a interview for 7 years, once you’re in there you’ll be fine.

Ah okay, see I didn't know as I'm only in light rail driving so ours I feel are completely different to heavy rail so figured they may be miles apart like ours are.

Yeah I think it's just nerves atm, I'm sure I'll do my best but I guess we'll see if that's good enough sorry to hear you didn't make it though

This is a common mistake people make. Just being in a safety critical role doesn’t give you any additional points, if anything it gives them more room to scrutinise you. Your best bet is to demonstrate that you’re able to meet their needs out of a railway/safety critical environment. It’s about demonstrating that you’re competent as a person rather than you being able to act competent at work. I work in a safety critical role and didn’t mention it once. I used other examples from different walks of life and passed. Loads of people who work in safety critical work fail the CBI/MMI because they rely on it too much. Your best bet is to demonstrate that you can be competent in any area of your life and apply that to the question. Also be mindful that they Will likely have more knowledge pertaining to the railway so if you make even a single mistake in your explanation, it will stick out like a sore thumb whereas if you describe an unfamiliar field to them, it leaves more room for error.

That’s just my opinion though and what I’ve deduced from loads of conductors failing the interview stage. Speak about whatever you feel confident and happy to talk about, maybe even something that envokes genuine emotion from you like happiness, annoyance, frustration, passion, anything.

Use varied examples from wildly different things as well if you can. Most importantly, be honest. Even when they ask “and how did that turn out”, you don’t always have to give a grand answer. Even if it didn’t turn out as well as it could have gone, it’s still a learning experience. Good luck to everyone else who still has their CBI to do and to all people working in the railway or safety critical roles, don’t think that’s an automatic shoe in because it’s not, it’s about competency not a CV interview.

Congratulations! I also applied for Euston, I’m still waiting on a date for my DMI. How was the DMI?

They were lovely and put you at ease. Make sure you know about the NTS's, look at the opc report and make sure you know about the company. The rest is a situational question and basically why you want to work for Avanti. Also remember to have a question ready for the end it's just good interview practice. Good luck I'm sure you will be fine just remember you obviously have the skills as you got this far so this is all about the job and the company.

Quick question - I also applied for the Cross Country job at Birmingham and haven't heard anything back yet, but I passed all the paper and computer tests to enhanced but failed the CBI - the people at the OPC gave the impression that the CBI was something that was Avanti specific so if CC progress the application would my passes count or do I still need to serve the 6 month wait?

So I’ve just found out that I am unable to continue my application because sat and passed the CBI with another toc and because of this, I am unable to sit the MMI within 6 months. Seems a bit unfair considering I passed the CBI and they are two different assessments.
This was on another thread so I guess you have to wait the 6 months unfortunately

No matter if the CBI is Avanti specific you have to wait 6 months between applications. So I doubt you'll progress further with XC which I know isn't the answer you want

Same. Found out on the 14th. I’ve accepted that I may not be contacted for an entire year as that’s what happened to some individuals during their recruitment last year. It’s better to not have any expectations than be anxiously waiting for something that might not even happen this year. Might be next week, might be next year, either way, when the call comes, I’ll be ready to give it my best, can’t do anything more than that anyway
14th December I found out
