Has anybody practised for the WAFV test (black square). I’ve failed this previously so this is my last chance. Every other test I’ve already passed to advanced. I used the practice material purchased from traineetraindriver previously and was hitting pretty much 100% every time in practice and honestly don’t know how I failed it on the day. I’m now reading various posts stating different things like the square keeps going darker or some saying the square goes from one distinct colour to another etc and I’m getting a little stressed with it but am reluctant to use the same practice material again as it may not replicate the exact test. Any help/advice or links to other test material much appreciated.
I’m not sure practicing will be of any benefit

I found the key is to move your focus around the smaller square in a circular motion so you don’t go square eyed, colour blind trance like, if that makes sense

Stick to moving around the edge of the small square that changes colour. If you look to the outer edge of the main screen, you’ll be liable to miss the change in shade. Move from one corner to the other. Just try and avoid staring at one spot

As for what colour it changes from / to, I seem to remember this being explained in the test instructions.

The rest is down to you to hold your concentration

Good luck

My 2nd stage is on the 5th and I've done no prep other than looking at interview questions.

I don't believe there's much prep you can do for the computer tests. I think you either get it or you don't rather than the interview where you can prepare for it by looking at the star technique and similar questions to prepare possible answers.

I'm just going to do my best on the day and hopefully that's enough

So I’ve searched and searched these forums to get an idea of what questions I might get asked if I make it through to the CBI. Seems to be more info on the MMI but guessing they are similar. Can anyone who has previously sat theirs confirm if I’m on the right path with the following:

Name a time you followed rules and procedures.
Name a time you dealt with an emergency situation.
Name a time you done a job similar to a train driver.
Name a training course over 2 weeks
Name a time you spend long periods of time on your own
Name a time it was important you didn't make a mistake
A time you have faced difficulties in your role/worked under pressure

Thanks in advance

Just had the email to say I’ve passed the CBI! Absolutely over the moon! Just need to swat up on what the DMI consists of now

Well done. Don't think anyone has had any contact from Avanti from this recruitment campaign as far as I can tell, unless anyone can correct me.

Mine still says this...

so you know, going well.
I don't want to sound negative but if you've not even done the first round of assessments yet you're probably out of this round of recruitment.

I applied for XC in January and my application still says in progress but they're recruiting again from last month for the same locations which means I'm not going to hear anything.

I was hoping my 390th message would be good news, but after sitting the second stage assessments today I'm afraid it's the end of the line for me on this recruitment drive. I passed the ATAVT and 2-Hand Co-Ordination Tests, but I failed the WAFT Vigilance test, and what's worse is that I'm definitely sure it was because of a trigger happy finger. I am very confident in my reaction times and getting all the dark squares, but for some reason I randomly pressed the button several times throughout the test and logged too many errors. In hindsight I should've kept my hand off the button and only touched it when I intended to press it. Regardless, gutted is an absolute understatement. :(

I felt the same on mine so in the end I kept my hand away and only moved it when I needed to press the button. It made a very loud bang each time but it paid off in the end.

Sorry to hear this mate, but at least you know what you need to do next time round. Take the positive that you passed the other two so when you next apply you only need to do the WAFT and the MMI/CBI

Try not to take it too hard, I was in the same boat as you in April last year, didn't get enhanced on TeaOcc so couldn't progress further with LNER. I was absolutely gutted but less than a year has gone and I've now passed all my psychometrics for Avanti. I know it feels horrible getting so far but now you know exactly what to expect and where you've gone wrong and that will help a huge amount next time around. Just look at it as a minor set back in the grand scheme of things and not a failure.

Yeah, it's considerably less crushing knowing that my results so far are valid for five years and that I will only have to do the one test I failed, but honestly I couldn't help but be mad at myself for such simple mistakes. I don't even know why I pressed the button excessively because I did well on the practice material and I even watched a grey square video and tapped my table every time it turned dark. I think on this particular day I was just on bad form, and unfortunately it just so happened to be at the time when I couldn't afford to be. Hopefully I'll get another chance sooner rather than later!

There's plenty of opportunities out there. It may not be with Avanti or it may be but at least you're well prepared and know you can pass the test with a little patience and I'm sure you'll fly through the interviews

Does anyone know what the pass or fail rate is for the DMI? Im curios to know if it’s harder than the CBI.. I’d have thought for those who make it that far have a fairly good chance of being offered a position, or am I wrong?

Do people think there may be a slight leniency at DMI given Avanti’s current position?

Depends on number of positions available vs number of interviewees i suppose. Supply vs Demand is a big factor.
Too much supply (interviewees), not enough demand (vacancies), chances are harder.
Too little supply, too much demand, chances are easier.

Even though Avanti have to recruit desperately, its likely they are waiting to see how much 'supply' they have, before making any sudden moves.
From what I know (and I stand to be corrected), the final Stage 2 batch is 20th January.

In regards to leniency you mentioned, that cant be guessed as thats discretionary and that could apply to whatever the company need at the time, and not just specific to addressing staff shortages (I.e more females, more BAME, more apprentices, more older, more younger, more LGBTQ etc can also be considered with leniency or preference)
