When you read adverts in magazines, or those free leaflets that get shoved through the letter box, and think, I must order some cozzee slippers or other such product.

When the only names you recognise in the New Year's Honours list are Brian May, Mary Quant and Anne Diamond.

When it gets to 10.30pm on New Years Eve and you decide to go to bed hoping that there aren't too many noisy fireworks at midnight.

No chance in Sheffield. However, when you can’t be arsed to even open the blinds and look out of the window…I was quite surprised at myself for not being bothered 38 minutes ago.

I had real trouble all day remembering it was new years eve !. The nearest I got was remembering that two years ago when, on New Years Eve, I got out of bed having been out of it and in a fever for five days with some virus or other - turned out to be Covid !.

Some good fireworks in the neighbourhood this year. The ones on the TV were drowned out a bit by music - why !.

When you wonder why they ever started having fireworks on New Year’s Eve…

I think if you’re really old enough fireworks happened on the 5th November unless it was a Sunday…

Back in the 60s in Newcastle we made more of New Year than further south. It was a Bank Holiday in Scotland but not in England although most in the North East treated it as a Bank Holiday anyway. We had some great parties but I don't recall fireworks, bagpipes, yes until very late! The office where I worked unlocked the front door for half of us to provide a token service until lunchtime when we went home still half asleep and in a hung over state.

I can't recall fireworks on a major scale until the millennium although it probably came earlier?

I’m only in my mid 60’s but certainly remember it being like that when I was a child. The only day I remember there ever being any fireworks was on 5th November. Bonfires and fireworks were only on that day unless it fell on a Sunday when people transferred it to the Saturday of Monday.

Now 71. Recently appeared on a (repeated) episode of "Winter Walks" on BBC4, walking through Wharfedale in Yorkshire, the episode having first been aired in 2021.

I remember that day but of course cannot remember the programme. We set up a little portable in the kitchen but unfortunately I left for work too early for the start of the show !. I used to finish my breakfast too early for breakfast TV !.

Getting older means I very rarely have to get up that early nowadays. I am too old to remember how early that was !.

I was going to post that you know you're getting old when you start complaining that the BBC is using the Licence Fee for things like Ru Paul's Drag Race (which in my opinion should be left to the commercial channels)... but your post proves that the Beeb have seemingly always had a bit of a tendency for funding utter nonsense!

For the record, I was 11 months old when Breakfast TV started. What was the deal with the Frank Bough affair? Didn't he basically just like wearing frilly knickers on the weekend? He'd be called a hero(-ine?) if all that came out now!

I don’t think that it was so much what he wore, although that would certainly have damaged his squeaky-clean reputation, nor who he paid and for what. I think that it was more what was reported to have got up his nose.

EDIT: Looking at Wikipedia again, it looks likes the who he paid and for what were only revealed a few years later. Probably didn’t help, though.

You know you are getting older when things you bought from high street stores become collectables. In 2011 I bought a "Fitz" retro table from Habitat for £12 just before the chain closed. I want a matching one now but they commonly sell for £60 now because they are collectable.

From Wikipedia

Sex and drugs scandal[edit]

On 13 June 1988, Bough left[13] the BBC for a rest before being sacked, after the News of the World reported he had taken cocaine and worn lingerie at parties involving sex workers.[14][15][16] The newspaper's former deputy editor Paul Connew later said of the scandal: "It caused a sensation at the time, given Bough's public image as the squeaky clean front man of breakfast and sports television."[17]

Roy Greenslade, professor of journalism at City University London, said that Bough made a "terrible mistake" by agreeing to speak to newspapers prior to publication of personal allegations, worsening the story.[18]

In August 1992, Bough was reported to have been involved in a dungeon orgy.[19][20][21][22] The press published photographs of him leaving the flat of a sex worker who specialised in sadomasochism.[23] Bough later spoke of his regret over his actions, saying his behaviour had been "exceedingly stupid".[1] He said in a television interview: "Everybody, when they have difficulties with their marriage or sexuality, surely has the right to sort out these things in the privacy of their own home."[24] His role as a rugby presenter ended after this second scandal.[1]

When every number one in the pop charts in a given year is made by an artist younger than you, or in the case of a band, all band members are younger than you.

Despite my relatively advanced years I'm not totally sure it's happened (yet) for me. Kate Bush, for example, prevented it occurring in 2022, and David Guetta would have prevented it happening in quite a few recent years, I suspect. It would be interesting to see a table of the oldest artist to reach number one in each year, to see for sure.

EDIT: there's this https://www.officialcharts.com/char...-to-score-a-number-1-single-in-the-uk__29564/. So 2018, 2020, 2021 and 2022 all featured older artists. Not sure about 2019 though.

Didn't it start with the millennium and just became a tradition ever since?
Certainly I don't remember many before that.

This year, there seemed to be more on New Years' Eve, and not so many on Nov 5th, even though the latter date was a Saturday and it should have been even more active than other years.

When a trio of major world pop stars from your youth (two of the three sadly no longer with us) are, or would have been, turning 65 this year. (Madonna, Michael Jackson and Prince, in case you haven't guessed).

It seems no time since the surviving Beatles were turning 65. Really frightening how fast time goes these days.

Indeed. ;)

If we want to get into puns, it only seems Yesterday that Paul McCartney was 64. Doing the maths, it was 2006, which to me does seem like yesterday. It's hard to believe that 2006 is as near the end of the 80s as the present.

On the other hand, 2006 is of course, one of the final years before everything started going a bit pear-shaped, beginning with the credit crunch. Seems a golden era now.

The local radio station devotes the weekend to playing UK number ones and you only recognise about two songs in every three.

Despite being a station aimed at (I think) the 30-60 age range, there's a heavy bias towards recent number ones, with relatively few from the 80s, 90s or even 00s - and almost nothing from the 60s and 70s.

Maybe they're working backwards and ones us oldies (pun intended) will recognise more if we're patient enough to stay tuned?

No, it's pretty random. Seems to be one song from >=2010 (guessing, as 2010 is about the time when my recognition of number ones declines significantly), then one song from <2010, alternating. Might be understandable for a station aimed at young people, but this one isn't - and its normal programming plays plenty of "oldies".

I'd expect a "number ones" special to cover the period since, I don't know, the mid-60s onwards, with every era equally represented. In fact that's what they normally do with their "golden hours", which start around then and in fact only go up to the mid-00s.
