I'm planning to travel to Southampton on 28th December. The forum ticket site gives an itinerary from Arlesey that includes Blackfriars to Waterloo via LUL. Would the ticket also be valid via London Bridge and Waterloo East by National Rail?

If you have Advance tickets, just check that the minimum connection times work that way.

It's a pleasant walk as well ( if it's fine and you have no baggage).
